· Describe Hubble’s Tuning Fork and how galaxies are classified

· Identify and classify the different types of galaxies

· Describe how astronomical images are produced, how CCD cameras work, and how and why filters are used

**Note: If a question is labeled “ THOUGHT QUESTION” we are looking for you to show critical thinking/justification in your answer, not a “correct” answer**

Definitions

Here are some terms from lecture that we will be using today in lab:

· Image of hubble’s tuning fork diagramMorphology – the description of the shape of a galaxy, i.e. spiral, elliptical, etc. Lab 5: Galaxy Classification Assignment

· Hubble’s Tuning Fork – organizational scheme for galaxies based on their photometric appearance

· Companion – the term which applies to a secondary galaxy that is in gravitational interaction with the main galaxy in question

· Jet – a focused beam of ionized material, usually moving at velocities near the speed of light

Part 1. Galaxy Classification

The main goal of this lab is to look through images of galaxies and identify which type of galaxy each is. One major tool used to identify galaxies is Hubble’s Tuning Fork. Edwin Hubble worked extensively on galaxies in the early 1900s trying to understand how they changed over time. Through this work he noticed that there were two main types of galaxies: elliptical and spiral. Some spiral galaxies have central bar-like features in their center, and these are classified as “barred spirals.” Hubble then developed his tuning fork, shown in Figure 1, where the handle contains elliptical galaxies and the fork shows spirals the top and barred spirals at the bottom. Lab 5: Galaxy Classification Assignment

THE TUNING FORK IS NOT AN EVOLUTIONARY PATH!

The S0, or lenticular, galaxies are a bit different. They have morphological properties of both ellipticals and spirals. S0 galaxies have very large central bulges, like ellipticals, and very small, faint disks with no spiral arms (almost like spirals). Irregulars (Sm; not shown) are a class of galaxy that do not fall under any standard morphology. They have no clear structure and appear highly disorganized in shape.

Image of hubble’s tuning fork diagram Figure 1: A simple schematic of Hubble’s Tuning Fork

Go to the following galaxy image database:

http://www.astro.gsu.edu/lab/website/labstuff/classification.html

Here you will find images of galaxies that have a known classification. The links to these galaxies are at the top, images show to the left. The unknown galaxies have links at the bottom and will show on the right. Lab 5: Galaxy Classification Assignment

1. Use Hubble’s Tuning Fork and the reference images in the database to classify the morphology of each unknown galaxy image (numbered 1-20) to the best of your ability. You will need to note for each galaxy whether or not there is visible spiral structure, rings, and/or bars. You will also need to note the presence of any other notable features, such as companions, jets, etc. Record your answers in Table 1. Lab 5: Galaxy Classification Assignment

Develop a 4-6 page position summary and an analysis of relevant position papers on a health care issue in a chosen population

Position papers are a method to evaluate the most current evidence and policies related to health care issues. They offer a way for researchers to explore the views of any number of organizations around a topic. This can help you to develop your own position and approach to care around a topic or issue. Develop a 4-6 page position summary and an analysis of relevant position papers on a health care issue in a chosen population

This assessment will focus on analyzing position papers about an issue related to addiction, chronicity, emotional and mental health, genetics and genomics, or immunity. Many of these topics are quickly evolving as technology advances, or as we attempt to push past stigmas. For example, technological advances and DNA sequencing provide comprehensive information to allow treatment to become more targeted and effective for the individual. However, as a result, nurses must be able to understand and teach patients about the impact of this information. With this great power comes concerns that patient conditions are protected in an ethical and compassionate manner.

Position papers are a way for individuals, groups, and organizations to express their views and intentions toward a specific issue. Develop a 4-6 page position summary and an analysis of relevant position papers on a health care issue in a chosen population. In health care, many position papers address specific policies, regulations, or other approaches to care. As a master’s-prepared nurse, you should feel empowered to express and advocate for your own views on policy and care matters. This is especially important when it comes to populations you or your organization cares for that are not receiving the quality, type, or amount of care that they require.

By synthesizing the positive and negative views of an issue, you can become better equipped to strengthen your own arguments and to respond to opposing views in an informed and convincing way.

Scenario

For this assessment, pretend you are a member of an interprofessional team that is attempting to improve the quality and outcomes of health care in a vulnerable population. For the first step in your team’s work, you have decided to conduct an analysis of current position papers that address the issue and population you are considering.

In your analysis, you will note the team’s initial views on the issue in the population as well as the views across a variety of relevant position papers. You have been tasked with finding the most current standard of care or evidenced-based practice and evaluating both the pros and cons of the issue. Develop a 4-6 page position summary and an analysis of relevant position papers on a health care issue in a chosen population. For the opposing viewpoints, it is important to discuss how the team could respond to encourage support. This paper will be presented to a committee of relevant stakeholders from your care setting and the community. If it receives enough support, you will be asked to create a new policy that could be enacted to improve the outcomes related to your chosen issue and target population.

The care setting, population, and health care issue that you use for this assessment will be used in the other assessments in this course. Consider your choice carefully. There are two main approaches for you to take in selecting the scenario for this assessment:

1. You may use one of the issues and populations presented in the  Vila Health: Health Challenges in Different Populations  media piece. For this approach, you may consider the population in the context of the Vila Health care setting, or translate it into the context in which you currently practice or have had recent experience. Develop a 4-6 page position summary and an analysis of relevant position papers on a health care issue in a chosen population

2. You may select a population and issue that is of interest to you and set them in the context of your current or desired future care setting. While you are free to choose any population of interest, the issue you choose should fall within one of the following broad categories:

· Genetics and genomics.

· Sickle cell, asthma, multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis.

· Immunity.

· Type 1 diabetes, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), congenital neutropenia syndrome.

· Chronicity.

· Arthritis, any type of cancer or lung or heart disease, obesity. Develop a 4-6 page position summary and an analysis of relevant position papers on a health care issue in a chosen population

· Addiction.

· Abuse of alcohol, prescription drugs, tobacco, illegal substances.

· Emotion and mental health.

· Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, eating disorders, psychosis.

Note: If you choose the second option, contact your faculty to make sure that your chosen issue and population will fit within the topic areas for this course. Develop a 4-6 page position summary and an analysis of relevant position papers on a health care issue in a chosen population

Assessing Baby Boomers as a Viable Market Segment for Travel and Tourism

Your friend owns a travel agency Dreamers Adventure Travel. At some point it was a thriving business with a stable and diverse clientele. As people became more Internet savvy in the 2000s, the travel agency lost some business to people booking their own trips directly online. This negatively affected the travel agency’s profitability. At this point, Dreamers Adventure Travel is facing such a crisis that your friend may close the business. Assessing Baby Boomers as a Viable Market Segment for Travel and Tourism

ORDER A PLAGIARISM – FREE PAPER NOW

You believe, however, that the Dreamers Adventure Travel could change their target market (formerly young urban professionals – yes, YUPPIES!) to include Baby Boomers, to increase revenue and their competitive advantage in the travel agency marketplace. Thus, you believe that Dreamers Travel could be more successful by tailoring their travel packages and services to each of their target markets.

Baby Boomers are largely entering retirement or are retired and many have a desire to travel (e.g., outdoor recreation, nature, adventure travel/tourism, cultural and historically important and exotic destinations, etc.). Clients in this market segment, on average, have enough discretionary income for travel and touring, like travelling in the groups of like-minded individuals, may have specific needs and preferences while travelling, and might still have a habit of turning to the travel agent for organizing their trips. You plan to build a tour/adventure travel experience package tailored to Baby Boomers’ travel preferences (potentially in groups) in the United States. Assessing Baby Boomers as a Viable Market Segment for Travel and Tourism

Your friend is intrigued by your idea but needs answers about to the potential demand and preferences among Baby Boomers. You decide to obtain these answers through research. The problem is that you don’t even know what you don’t know. You start planning and you ask yourself the following questions:

1. What research or evidence-based information is available so I can become more informed by others’ knowledge, experience and expertise on adventure travel preferences of Baby Boomers?

2. What print publications or online publications (e.g., journals, professional and trade magazines, mass media magazines focused on the target market) can I access to learn more before I invest additional time and effort? Assessing Baby Boomers as a Viable Market Segment for Travel and Tourism

3. Would focus groups with past Baby Boomer clients who haven’t signed up for trips or used your agency in a while be useful to tap for more insight? Why?

4. If past clients are not interested in sharing their views, how else can you get some insight from Baby Boomers in your target market (including the region your business is located in, which is Hayward)? Who should be the participants (e.g., any older adults, adults with specific socio-demographic characteristics, other travel agents)? Should the focus groups be mixed or same gender, age, race/ethnicity? Why or why not?

5. Based on key informants who have access to local Baby Boomers, (1), what types of questions would you include in your unstandardized/unstructured guide [a set of the open-ended questions] for the focus groups? ( Write 4-5 open-ended questions to explore the topic of interest. Consider order effects.) Assessing Baby Boomers as a Viable Market Segment for Travel and Tourism

Fast Forward: Let’s assume that you have conducted two focus groups with nine Baby Boomers in each group and obtained the helpful insights and data. Next, you want to use the insights from the focus groups to develop a sampling frame of the target population. For this brief survey on travel needs and preferences among Baby Boomers, you want to be able to make conclusions about the entire population and, thus, you need to be able to generalize the results.

6. Based on the data from the focus groups, what would a survey (a set of the closed-ended questions) look like? Some speculation/imagination is required here. Write 4-5 closed-ended questions to explore the topic of interest. Aspire for the highest level of measurement. Consider the order effects. Don’t include questions about the socio-demographic characteristics. Assume that they will be added automatically at the end. Assessing Baby Boomers as a Viable Market Segment for Travel and Tourism

7. Data Collection Method: Now, you need to decide how you will collect the data. (e.g., mailed questionnaire, face-to-face structured/schedule-standardized interview, telephone, online)? What data collection method will you choose? Provide a justification for your choice and explain the advantages and disadvantages the data collection method you are choosing. Please be specific.

  • Mall Accused of Racism in a Wrongful Death Trial in BuffaloNew York Times, Nov. 15, 1999Nearly four years ago, a black teenager was crushed beneath a dump truck as she crossed a seven-lane highway to get to her job at a mall. The shopping center had barred stops by her bus, which mainly served poor minority neighborhoods. Now the death of Cynthia N. Wiggins, 17, is the focus of a wrongful death trial. Her family, which hired the lawyer Johnnie L. Cochran Jr., is seeking $150 million in damages. Mr. Cochran argued last week before a jury that includes no blacks that racism contributed to her death.”Her fate was sealed when she was a little 10-year-old fifth grader,” Mr. Cochran told the jury during opening remarks on Monday. Lehman College Race and Ethnicity Racism and Structural Discrimination Analysis. ”Her destiny is being decided by powerful businessmen who run a mall.”The trial is expected to last several weeks. Shortly after the six-member jury was seated, Mr. Cochran was overruled when he objected that the selection process had been flawed. Out of 95 people chosen at random from Erie County for the jury pool, five — or 5.2 percent — were black, compared with 12.3 percent of the county’s population. The jurors are three white women, two white men and a man of Indian descent. The family is suing the mall’s owner, Pyramid Companies of Syracuse, the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, which operates the Metro Bus line, the driver of the truck and the company that owned it.The story of Ms. Wiggins’s death has slowly emerged in the courtroom of Justice Jerome C. Gorski of State Supreme Court. On a dreary December morning, Ms. Wiggins said goodbye to her 4-month-old son, Taquilo Castellanos, and her grandmother at their home on Buffalo’s east side, and caught the Route 6 Metro Bus to her job at the food court in the Walden Galleria in suburban Cheektowaga. She got out at Walden Avenue and skirted between the bus and banks of snow. Lehman College Race and Ethnicity Racism and Structural Discrimination Analysis.Instead of walking up to the intersection, which has no crosswalks or pedestrian signal, she threaded her way through stopped traffic and had made it across six of the highway’s seven lanes when the light changed.Witnesses say a dump truck knocked the teenager to the pavement. The rear wheels rolled over her. The driver, John P. Bunch, said he never saw Ms. Wiggins. She died two weeks later, never regaining consciousness.Mall officials have acknowledged they turned down the transit authority’s repeated requests to allow the Route 6 bus onto their property, but say they did so to keep out rowdy juveniles, who had been causing problems at a nearby mall and a skating rink. After Ms. Wiggins’s death, the mall opened up its property to public buses, under the threat of a boycott by the Buffalo teachers union and local civil rights groups. In testimony, bus officials have described a mall more interested in discouraging the poor from visiting than in deterring crime.Gordon Foster, a retired transportation authority official who before the mall opened in 1989 had been involved in trying to bring the Route 6 bus onto mall property, said a Pyramid executive, Kenneth D. Cannon, made it clear that would not happen. ”It sounded like a class thing,” Mr. Foster said, ”and that was quite a revelation.”The first allegation of racism arose when a white businessman whose family owned a local music store chain said he was shocked when Mr. Cannon told him that public buses would not be allowed.”I knew the people who rode those buses were our customers and clerks,” the businessman, Stafford D. Ritchie II, testified. He said he also knew most of the people riding the Walden Avenue bus were black. Lehman College Race and Ethnicity Racism and Structural Discrimination Analysis. ”I concluded this was discrimination based on race,” he said.Lawyers for the Galleria have emphasized that bus riders have always had the choice of transferring to a shuttle that stopped 200 feet from a mall entrance and did not require crossing a highway. The mall’s lawyers have also said the Galleria, which did allow charter buses, was not legally obligated to allow access by public transportation. They said other Buffalo area malls were excluding Metro buses at the time of the accident. And, they note, Ms. Wiggins was jaywalking.”This event that occurred on Dec. 14, 1995, was a traffic accident,” said the mall’s lawyer, Robert P. Watkins, of the Washington firm Williams & Connolly. ”It was a tragedy, but the mall had nothing to do with it.”Although top officials from Pyramid, including Mr. Cannon, have not yet taken the witness stand, the shopping center’s general manager, James Soos, testified he was surprised to learn that his superiors had denied bus access to the mall. Incident 10: To Vaccinate, or Not?

Jenna and Chris Smith are the proud parents of Ana, a 55–day–baby girl born without complications at a Community Hospital. Since delivery, the parents have bonded well with Ana and expressed their desire to raise her as naturally as possible. For the Smiths, this means breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months, making their baby food using pureed organic foods, and not allowing Ana to be vaccinated.

The Smiths are educated and explain they have researched vaccines and decided the potential harms they caused far outweigh any benefits. They point to the rise in autism rates as proof of the unforeseen risk of vaccines. Their new pediatrician, Dr. Angela Kerr, listens intently to the Smiths’ description of their research, including online mommy–blogs that detail how vaccines may have caused autism in many children. The Smiths conclude by resolutely stating they’ve decided not to vaccinate An despite the medical community’s recommendations. Ethical Case Study-To Vaccinate or Not

Dr. Kerr states that while vaccines have sparked controversy in recent years, she strongly recommends that Ana become fully vaccinated. Dr. Kerr explains that vaccines have saved the lives of millions of children worldwide and have been largely responsible for decreases in child mortality over the past century. For example, the decreased incidence of infection with the potentially fatal Haemophilus influenzae type b has resulted from routine immunization against that bacterium. Similarly, epidemics such as the recent measles outbreak are usually associated with individuals who have not been vaccinated against that pathogen.

Dr. Kerr goes on to endorse the general safety of vaccines by informing Ana’s parents that safety profiles of vaccines are updated regularly through data sources such as the federal government’s Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). The VAERS, a nationwide vaccine safety surveillance program sponsored by the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is accessible to the public at https://vaers.hhs.gov/index. This system allows transparency for vaccine safety by encouraging the public and healthcare providers to report adverse reactions to vaccines and enables the federal government to monitor their safety. No vaccine has been proven casual for autism spectrum disorder (ASD, or any developmental disorder. On the contrary, many studies have shown that vaccines containing thimerasol, an ingredient once thought to cause autism, do not increase the risk of ASD.

Finally, Dr. Kerr reminds the Smiths that some children in the general population have weakened immune systems because of genetic diseases or cancer treatment, for example. It may not be medically feasible to vaccinate such children. Other children are too young to receive certain immunizations. Instead, these children are protected because almost all other children (and adults) have been vaccinated, decreasing their exposure to vaccine–preventable illnesses (VPIs). This epidemiological concept is known as “herd immunity.” As more parents refuse immunization for their healthy children, the rate of VPIs will increase. This puts vulnerable children at significant risk of morbidity and mortality. Routine childhood immunization contributes significantly to the health of the general public by providing a direct benefit to those vaccinated and by protecting others via herd immunity. Dr. Kerr concludes by stating that after considering the risks versus the benefits of immunization, most states require vaccinations before children can attend school. However, parents may decide not to vaccinate under specific circumstances, which vary by state. Ethical Case Study-To Vaccinate or Not

Jenna and Chris Smith confirm their understanding of what Dr. Kerr has explained but restate that they do not want Ana vaccinated now. Dr. Kerr is perplexed as to what to do.

Develop a solution to a specific ethical dilemma faced by a healthcare professional by applying ethical principles. Describe the issues and a possible solution in a 3-5 page paper.

Introduction
Whether you are a nurse, a public health professional, a health care administrator, or in another role in the health care field, you must base your decisions on a set of ethical principles and values. Your decisions must be fair, equitable, and defensible. Each discipline has established a professional code of ethics to guide ethical behavior. In this assessment, you will practice working through an ethical dilemma described in a case study. Your practice will help you develop a method for formulating ethical decisions.
