In this Unit, you will be reading about the integumentary system and skeletal system. You are to research and discuss a disorder of the integumentary system or skeletal system and their functioning. This is going to give you a practice run for the discussion CHONDORCALCINOSISboard/presentation that is due in Unit 4. You will be choosing those topics in the unit 3 section. You do not have to make a presentation for this, it is only a discussion, but you will need to research your topic, just like you will need to for your presentation, that is why I say it is a practice run.

1. Select a disorder from the list below. Send me your choice, and I will put your name underneath your choice so that no one else can post on the same thing at that point. It is first come first served so whoever sends me their topic first, will get that topic.

  2. Title your post with the name of the disorder.

3. Using best writing practices, discuss in paragraph format the following:
Paragraph 1: Succinct, relevant information particular to the disorder as it relates to the system.  Do NOT give statistics here those belong in the next paragraph along with prognosis, you will NOT get credit if you give stats and do not talk about the actual disorder which means you need to talk about what the system normally does and what it does/does not do because of the disorder. Please be detailed in your description of how the system normally functions and how it functions with the selected disorder.
Paragraph 2: Signs/Symptoms, treatment (if any), & prognosis (forecast of the likely CHONDORCALCINOSIS outcome).  Also include any unique or interesting information that you think needs to be included in this paragraph.
Paragraphs 3 and 4: Peer reviewed studies. Peer reviewed studies are research studies that have been published after a panel of the author’s peers have replicated the work. You can go to the library and search for them and there is a button that you can press to make sure that you get peer reviewed. Newspapers are not peer reviewed. Websites will only work if they have actual studies (articles) published on their site. Present 2 peer-reviewed studies that have been done on your disorder. Discuss each part of the study, so include a short introduction, participants, methods, results, and discussion. Also include why you chose the study, what did you find interesting about it or what caught your attention. Since you are presenting two studies, these paragraphs should be relatively long (longer than the other two). If you cannot find any relevant studies, select another disorder because this is a major portion of your grade for this discussion.

NOTE: Each paragraph should contain 4-5 well-developed sentences.

4. Include hyperlinked references URL (or URL’s) at the bottom of the discussion post, including links for your basic information and peer-reviewed studies.
5. Respond to at least 2 classmates with something substantial, a simple “I agree, I disagree, or great job” will not suffice to get credit.
6. Your original post MUST be at least 350 words and your responses to classmates MUST be at least 150 words each.

For credit to be awarded:

Post must be original (student’s own writing). No credit will be awarded if information was directly copied/pasted. Turn-it-in will be used to evaluate originality.
Disorder was not already posted by another class member.
Hyperlinked URL/URL’s is/are accessible.
Two peer reviewed studies are completely and accurately presented.
Posts must meet minimum word count requirements.

Grading Criteria:

Topic addressed adequately and accurately (25 pts): Content related to topic and includes required components. Describes how the system functions normally and how it functions (or does not function) with this disorder. General information on the disorder is presented following the guidelines posted above.

CHONDORCALCINOSIS Two peer-reviewed studies (30 pts): two peer-reviewed studies are completely and accurately presented

Mechanics ( 10pts): Grammar and mechanics are sound; Errors present do not suggest lack of understanding of the essentials of written communication. Title reflects topic. Paragraphs demonstrate sound organizational structure that employs smooth, consistent transitions. Uses paraphrasing rather than quotes.

References (5 pts): Observes copyright laws (information paraphrased). Credible references are used. Hyperlinked URL/URL’s is/are provided.

Responses to classmates (30 pts.)

The due dates for each are clearly listed in the syllabus, course calendar, and check off lists.  Please do not wait until the due date to post your original post so that classmates have time to give an appropriate response.  Waiting until the due date to post your original post will result in a loss of points for your original post.
