Using the Internet, research acquisitions that are currently underway and choose one of these acquisitions to discuss. Based on the firms characteristics and experiences and the reasons cited to support the acquisition, do you feel it will result in increased strategic competitiveness for the acquiring firm? Why or why not?

  • Mergers and Acquisitions have become a very common phenomenon in the present business environment. Historically mergers have occurred between companies that are of a similar size that have had related interests. Acquisitions gravitate toward larger organizations acquiring small businesses. The overarching goal behind mergers and acquisitions is to create long term shareholder value obtain a larger market share and achieve greater efficiency. Companies use mergers and acquisitions for a variety of reasons. This is a result of the present day dynamic environment in which companies are faced with dealing with constantly changing ongoing technological advancement, market globalization global competition and the drive to leverage advantage. It is clear that mergers and acquisitions have become one of the most important corporate level strategies in the new millennium.

Of the problems that affect the success of an acquisition which one do you believe is the most critical in global economy? Why? What should firms do to make certain that they do not experience such a problem when they use an acquisition strategy?

  • In contrary what we often find is that many such mergers fail to create efficiency’s, achieve synergistic benefits or increase long term shareholder value. Mainly in circumstance where the underlying motivations and conditions  surrounding the restructuring are with the  purpose  of taking advantage of factors such as  perceived market reaction of the M&A as a sole motivation, then usually the foundations on the acquisition or merger may not be sufficient to create true shareholder wealth. Mergers and acquisition is always involve layoffs as the administrators of the purchasing employer try to reveal that increase in revenues / profitability which is easier to achieve by using cost reduction and this happens regularly through the reduction of labor costs. Transnational and acquisitions will regularly pose culture- related problems which need to be reduced.

Question:

Mary Elizabeth Mills is a textile manufacturing firm located in the southern United States. The company carefully prepares all financial statements in accordance with GAAP, and gives a copy of all financial statements to each department. In addition, the company keeps records on quality control, safety, and environmental pollution by the company. It then prepares “scorecards” for each department indicating their performance. Recently, the financial impact of the second set of information was added, and the information has been used in the evaluation of employees for merit pay and promotions.

At the most recent employee meeting, Carl Victor, marketing manager, expressed his discomfort with the system. He said there was no guarantee that the second set of information was fair, since there were no generally accepted principles for this kind of information. He also said that it was kind of like keeping two sets of books—one following all legal requirements, and the other one actually used by the company.

Required:

  1. Is it ethical to evaluate managers in the way described? DISCUSS and Explain (a limited yes or no is not sufficient).
  2. Discuss one or more safeguards the company could build into its system to ensure the ethical treatment of employees.

GIVEN ANSWER:

I personally do not believe it is ethical to evaluate managers in this manner. I believe that this manner leads to favoritism and also unfairness in the balance of egos. This can potentially lead to employee conflicts and also scorecard error. The scorecard may help some employees get their act together but to some it may be detrimental to them. For example, some employees cannot function under high pressure and with employees not doing so well, their promotions and pay may be lower, which is not ethical what so ever. To be fair, employee pay should be standardized and bonuses can be based on performance. Carl Victor makes a valid point that the company can potentially abuse the scorecard system if it wanted to by giving the employees a lower grade thus pocketing the money for themselves. There is no way of knowing if the company actually took the time to grade each employee and when there is money involved there is too much of a risk to be ethical. I believe that legal standard for financial reporting has to be able to represent the specific outputs of the company. If the company is doing well then all the employees deserve a larger bonus and if the company is doing bad then the employees will receive a lower bonus.

If the company truly wants to have their own grading system, I believe the company should hire an external company to evaluate its employee to prevent biasness. For example, the company can set up a contract with KPMG where their auditors would come in to evaluate the company’s / employees’ performance and areas where the company needs improvement in. By having external auditors reviewing Mary Elizabeth Mills, it allows fair grading of the different sectors in the company and prevents the company from tampering the financial reports. I also believe the company should not grade individual employees but rather the company should grade different sectors of the company. By doing so prevents favoritism in the workplace as mentioned earlier and reduces pressure on those who cannot handle it. But as I have discussed earlier, the company should not be grading their sectors but rather an external audit company should do it.

Please respond to classmate post with 3-4 meaningful sentences:

Is the term corporate entrepreneurship an oxymoron? In other words, can corporations—especially large ones—be innovative? Support your answer with examples.

Large companies have strict standards and controls. They are based on core philosophies and strong foundations. In enormous companies, the innovation, and the concepts are restricted by the corporate Bureaucracy and therefore, the chances of innovation and creativity are limited. Corporate entrepreneurship is not so advanced or used highly in large companies.

Use the Internet to find an example of two corporate innovations—one brought about through autonomous strategic behavior and one developed through induced strategic behavior. Which innovation seems to hold the most promise for commercial success and why?

Autonomous strategic behavior is a bottom-up process in which new product champions pursue new product ideas. An example would be the iPod. It was developed through manpower and engineering capabilities of the company’s employees.

Induced strategic behavior is a top-down process where strategy is filtered through the company’s existing hierarchy which is already structured. This process is consistent with the company’s strategies that are already used. An example of this would be the iPhone. Manpower was used to develop a sophisticated cellphone that can continue to rate above the competition in the market.

Of these two types, the most profitable would be induced strategic behavior because no additional cost is needed to be a part of the output. It is helpful to the manpower as well as to the management

Social Support for Parents of Children with Chronic Mental Illness.Discussion

The parents of children with chronic mental illness have a lot of responsibilities in taking care of their children since they are regarded as the primary caregivers. These parents often suffer high levels of stress and depression while caring for their children (Chai et al., 2018). They concentrate more on meeting their children’s mental health needs and ignore theirs because they regard their children’s needs as more important. There are two types of social support interventions for parents of children with chronic mental illness; nurse-provided social support and social support provided by personal relationships and social networks. This paper will examine the influence that nursing models and theories have on research and practice on the best social support intervention for parents of children with chronic mental illness.Discussion

Nurse-provided social support creates social ties and communicative social exchanges between nurses and patients or caregivers to help them manage their illnesses, feel cared for, and establish personal control (Bjorlykhaug et al., 2021). Nurse-provided social support includes supportive care where nurses follow up on how the parents are doing emotionally and psychologically. Also, the nurses offer the parents a non-judgmental listening ear, give information where necessary, and give referrals to professionals who can help them. This approach effectively provides social support to parents of children who have a chronic mental illness because it helps them manage their stress levels.

Social support is provided through personal relationships, and social networks are people, organizations, or agencies that a caregiver can contact for support (Bjorlykhaug et al., 2021). Personal relationships create the best social support networks because they are friends and relatives who know these parents well and know how to make them feel better. Social networks can be online, agencies, or support groups that a person may be referred to for support. Personal relationships and social networks provide social support like physical assistance, resources and information sharing, emotional and psychological help, and positive attitude Discussion transmission. This form of support is more effective because the parents have a relationship with their support system. Also, it allows them to interact with people in similar situations, which gives them courage.

To conclude, both nurse-provided social support and social support provided by personal relationships and social networks effectively provide social support for parents of children with chronic mental illness. However, social support from personal relationships and social networks is more effective. The parents have a personal relationship with their support system or can relate to their situation, making it easy for them to help and listen to them.

Effectiveness of support from nursing professionals versus social support provided by personal relationships and social networks to parents of children with chronic mental illness.

Generally speaking, nurses understand how to support families during times of mental illness-which can be a difficult challenge for any healthcare team member (Reiss et al., 2019). Nurses are empathetic, understanding and non-judgmental when interacting with patients and their families. Nurses also provide education and emotional support when necessary. This care is crucial when caring for patients with mental health disorders.Discussion

Reiss et al. imply that providing support for mental health issues is crucial when interacting with patients themselves- especially during routine clinical duties. Nurses are in direct contact with patients daily, so that negativity can have severe consequences for people and families (Reiss et al., 2019). Supporting positive mental health can be challenging, but it is essential for both patients and families if they want to feel safe and secure in clinical environments. Therefore, nurses must learn how to avoid upsetting patients or to create an unsafe working environment for them and their families.

Taking care of mental health issues is challenging in any workplace; however, nursing professionals are uniquely equipped to handle these challenges successfully (Xu et al., 2018). They understand how to support patients and families during times of mental illness; they know how to recognize signs of mental health disorders, and they know how to create an emotionally safe work environment for everybody involved in healthcare.

On the other hand, on social help and network, parents of children with mental illness are often depressed, anxious and stressed (Pinquart, 2018). Parents face great difficulty managing their child’s illnesses and have trouble taking care of themselves because of their child’s illnesses.

Pinquart explains that friends and relatives help with daily grocery shopping, cooking and cleaning. These friends also provide moral support when the parents of mentally ill children cannot do so themselves. However, friends usually do not have enough time to provide all the needed support. People with mental illnesses themselves can be a source of support for the families of people with mental illnesses (Pinquart, 2018). Although they can sympathize with the family, they are preoccupied with their problems, making it challenging to offer help beyond what the law requires.

Currently, no federal law requires employers to provide any support to parents of people with mental illnesses, even if employed (Xu et al., 2018). Until there is more government funding for research into new psychiatric drugs, a population will always struggle with severe mental health conditions that need extra attention and understanding from society.

In conclusion, many people need support raising a child with a mental illness. Even though social support is vital to families affected, nursing professional support is effective in caring for the families of children with long-lasting mental illness.

Social Support for Parents of Children with Chronic Mental Illness

Children’s Mental health is essential to their overall health and well-being. Mental illnesses in children typically affect learning, behavior, and emotional control. These mental conditions often cause distress in the children’s families as the entire household struggles with ways of coping and dealing with the challenges associated with these diseases. Children’s most commonly diagnosed conditions are attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, depression, and behavior disorders (CDC, 2022). Parents of children diagnosed with mental illness as often significantly impacted since they are the leading caregivers in most cases. Thus, it is essential to ensure they receive social support in fulfilling their parental duties and caring for their children.

Generally, these parents can access professional social support services or rely on personal relationships and their social networks. These interventions have their pros and cons. For instance, nurse-provided or professional social support is advantageous since parents can benefit from training on how to manage difficult behavior in their children positively. Additionally, professional care grants access to interventions like family-focused counseling and access to relevant information on strategies for dealing with children who have mental conditions. The overarching potential drawbacks to seeking professional or nurse-provided social support services are related to access and cost. In some settings, parents with children with mental conditions cannot afford professional help or lack access to human resources to assist them.

Conversely, these parents can also rely on personal relationships and social networks to assist them in dealing with their mentally ill children. Social network is a framework that defines an individual’s social relationships and the nature of the ties that bind them to others. These relationships can serve as buffers to stress. Being surrounded by familiar faces enhances the parents’ functional support and coping strategies. In addition, these personal relationships and social networks make it easier to marshal resources, such as financial support, to assist the parents in the treatment journey of their children.

However, despite some advantages to relying on social networks, this approach can be limited in various ways. First, it is dependent on the willingness of individuals within the social network to assist, which is not always the case. Secondly, individuals within the social support network may lack the knowledge to offer the parents meaningful help. In addition, this approach is subject to variability over time in the availability of members of a social network depending on the illness severity and setting. In lieu of these glaring disadvantages, professional or nurse-provided social support is the most efficacious intervention for parents of children with mental illness.

Social Support

The aim of both professional/nurse-provided and personal relationship/social network-provided social support is to help parents of children with chronic mental illnesses cope with the prevailing conditions. Both are necessary as often, the parents’ mental health ends up neglected as the child’s mental healthcare takes priority. However, there are significant differences in their respective mechanisms and effectiveness, which have been discussed in detail below.

Nurse-provided social support takes advantage of nurses’ educational training and experiences in psychiatric units. It provides support that is more professionally oriented. Potential effectiveness, therefore, can be measured in terms of the nurses’ efficiency in delivering informational, emotional and social support. Parents of children with chronic mental illness will thus benefit from consistent information, affirmation, encouragement, and clarification in addition to personalized mental healthcare. As Adamus (2022) asserts, it is impossible to achieve mental health without professional support, especially for parents of children with chronic mental illnesses.

Support from a personal relationship and social networks is subject to personal views, attitudes, beliefs and probably misconceptions regarding a specific health condition, in this case, chronic mental health (Shalaby & Agyapong, 2020). Therefore, social support from people and social networks which have already branded a condition in a specific way might not be as effective as support from a healthcare professional, whose bases of support provision is only based on the scientific truth of the condition at hand. Due to this, is is thus correct to put it that professional provided social support tends to be more effective than personal and social networks social support.

Moreover, there exists increased chances that personal and social network social support will only concentrate on one issue, which is the child’s chronic mental illness (Shalaby & Agyapong, 2020). On the other hand, nurse provided social support can be regarded as holistic because a nurse may consider aspects such as religion and cultural beliefs when offering their social support. As a result, the parents will feel that their identity is recognized which opens up an avenue for extensive sharing. In such situations, parents will likely open up the most hidden issues that may disturbing them, increasing the chances that they will get all the help they might need in regard to coping with the fact that their child is chronically ill.

Additionally, professionals understand situations better, possibly due to the level of training and/or experience in their respective lines of duty (Chan et al., 2019). Having a professional nurse rather than a personal or social networks based social support will likely be more effective due to expertise. Even if the professionals have not dealt with a similar case before, they have been trained on how to approach such situations to ensure that their beneficiaries receive the best possible care

Topic 1. Healthy People 2030 Mental Health and Mental Disorders

At some point in their lives, over half of all Americans will receive a mental condition diagnosis. Healthy People The focus of 2030 is on the prevention, screening, evaluation, and treatment of behavioral and mental problems. The goals for mental health and mental disorders also include improving the health and standard of living for those who Discussion suffer from these conditions. All ages and racial/ethnic groups are impacted by mental disorders; however, some groups are disproportionately afflicted. Additionally, statistics indicate that only 50% of individuals with mental problems receive the necessary care. Additionally, there are connections between physical and mental wellness. Mental illnesses like anxiety and depression can make it difficult for people to engage in healthy practices.            Mental disorders are among the most common causes of disability, and the resulting disease burden is among the highest of all diseases. The proportion of U.S. adults estimated to have a mental Discussion disorder rose from 17.7 percent in 2008 to 19.1 percent, or 47.6 million people, in 2018. Similarly, the proportion of adults suffering from seriously impairing mental disorders has risen significantly, from 3.7 percent in 2008 to an estimated 4.6 percent, or 11.4 million people, in 2018. However, in 2018 fewer than half of adults with any mental illness received mental health services in the past year. Of the 4.6 million adults ages 18 to 25 years in 2018 with a past-year major depressive episode, about 2.3 million, or 49.6 percent, received treatment for depression in the past year. Moreover, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for the deaths of 48,344 Americans in 2018.

Topic 2.  U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF).

The USPSTF recommends screening for depression in the general adult population, including pregnant and postpartum women. Screening should be implemented with adequate systems in place to ensure accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, and appropriate follow-up.

The USPSTF concludes with at least moderate certainty that there is a moderate net benefit to screening for depression in adults, including older adults, who receive care in clinical practices that have adequate systems in place to ensure accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, and appropriateDiscussion  follow-up after screening. The USPSTF also concludes with at least moderate certainty that there is a moderate net benefit to screening for depression in pregnant and postpartum women who receive care in clinical practices that have CBT or other evidence-based counseling available after screening.

Topic 1: Healthy People 20230

Describe your selected health problem. Why is the selected topic important?

Teen suicide is defined as an event of action where a teen causes their death on purpose. Teen suicide has become a significant health indicator, as per the healthy people 2030 report. It should be known that suicide is one of the leading causes of death among youths after motorcycle accidents. The selection of this topic was triggered by the increased rate of teen suicide, which requires immediate interventions that could help reduce the rate of suicide among adolescents. According to the world health organization statistics on teen suicide, it has been established that over 500 adolescents commit suicide in the united states each year (Stewart & Zullo, 2020). These stats indicate that each year, at least 12 suicides are committed by young people for every 100000 youths. Increasing rate of adolescent suicide is creating many worries for Discussion parents and the public at large. Therefore, there is a great need to understand the risk factors for teen suicide and identify appropriate interventions that could be deployed to minimize deaths resulting from suicides.

Will this problem lead to secondary conditions or complications?

It should be noted that not all teens attempt suicide and manage to take their own life. In a few isolated circumstances, suicide attempts may fail, leading to complications or developing secondary conditions such as disabilities. Parents, schools, and other relevant agencies should work on finding major leading and motivating factors for suicide attempts, such as exposure to violent parents, substance, and drug abuse, neglection, and gender prejudice(Rice, 2021).

What criteria are used to understand the risk of developing such conditions or complications?

Through a collection of data from focus groups, online research a review of existing literature from police and other law criminal justice agencies, adequate information can be gathered about significant causes and risk factors for teen suicide (MALOKU & MALOKU, 2020).

Topic 2:

Describe your findings and discuss the strengths or benefits of this source. Would you modify something about it, mainly the information concerning your selected health problem?

Upon searching keywords such as teen suicide, the site generated 128 results indicating the status of the search results. It also displayed the type, year, topic name, age group, and category of significant risk factors for teen suicide-related issues. The benefit o this source is that it generates evidence bases results about teen suicides. Secondly, the site helps the researcher identify the most current data source with reference to the selected topic. It automatically organizes evidence-based articles according to the year of publication. This makes it easy for researchers to set only moots recent articles for review on the significant issues regarding adolescent suicides. Secondly, the site is more reliable and effective when researching various topics of great concern as far as the healthcare sector is concerned.

It is worth mentioning that the source also provides adequate and reliable data organized with respect to the researched topic. For example, when I searched bout teen suicide, the site not only generated unmoor results that were topic-specific but also provided results under various subheadings such as depression and suicide risk factors among teens. This helped me identify depression as one of the risk factors for adolescent depression. Also, the site generates more insights into the causes of teen suicide, citing various predisposing factors such as mental and cognitive challenges as well as substance abuse. This made it easy for me to gather enough content on the causes of adolescent suicide. In my view, I would not modify anything since the site is exemplarily made with ease of use and generation of results within a few seconds after a single click.
