In the United States of American, 1 in 5 adults live with mental illness (U.S. Department of health and Human Services, n.d.). however, insurance coverage for mental health or addiction conditions have shown less extensive compared to coverage for a physical illness. There are varying degrees of severity of mental illness, ranging from moderate to severe. With varying degrees of severity comes varying clinical needs, treatments and therapies. Having a one size fits all outlook on benefits and coverage for mental illness is an injustice to the nation’s citizens. This can result in restricted access to services, high out of pocket spending, and under treatment. The Federal mental health and Addiction Equality  HCA-DQ5-Reply Act sought to eliminate historical disparities between insurance coverage for behavioral health treatment and coverage for medical treatment (Hardwood et al., 2017).
As an emergency department nurse, I have witnessed numerous mental health patients on multiple, differing scales. The emergency department seems to be used as a holding place for individuals in a mental health crisis who are waiting for inpatient beds. We often have so many patients waiting for inpatient treatment that rooms must be doubled, and medical rooms need to be taken to have enough space to room these patients. Our nation is in a mental health crisis. There are not enough facilities to take the patients who desperately need help or providers to treat them. I’ve spoke with other healthcare professionals about this crisis, and everyone has seemed to come to the same theory: the funding is not HCA-DQ5-Replythere to support expansion in mental health services. A national shortage of mental health providers, the high price of care, and lack of insurance coverage for mental health services all make it difficult for people with mental health disabilities to access care (Coleman et al., 2022).
Equalizing benefits and insurance coverage between mental health treatments and service compared to physical medical coverage would greatly help these individuals. Being able to collect adequate funds for services delivered will increase interest in the mental health field. This will also stimulate growth. Most of the patients who end up sitting for days at a time within the emergency room awaiting inpatient treatment would have a better opportunity to access care before their crisis reached the level that made it emergent. Therapy and services would be more affordable and available prior to crisis escalation, decreasing the need for emergent inpatient treatment. In addition, there would be an increase in inpatient facilities, providers and more beds available.
According to Coleman, et al. (2022), individuals battling mental illness is disproportionately represented by minority populations. This includes populations affected by poverty, race, education and age. Often individuals forgo their mental health needs by not attending therapy or refilling medications because they must choose between paying rent and buying groceries or attaining mental health services. There are many challenges for those suffering from mental health disorders in the United States today. There are many stigmas that arise from people having a mental health disorder diagnosis. This is a vulnerable population that desperately need help with resources without the negative viewpoint of the public. According to the Center of Disease Control (CDC) and National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI), nearly 46,000 lives were lost to suicide in 2020 alone (NAMI, 2022). This high number is alarming because these lives lost could have been prevented if the general public were educated on mental health and its effects on those who silently suffer from it. The Mental Health Parity Act of 2008 is a federal law that prevents group health insurance plans that provide mental health or substance use disorder benefits from imposing less favorable benefits on those benefits than on medical or surgical benefits. Before the Mental Health Parity Act, it was difficult for individuals with a mental mood disorder or addiction to have their treatments covered under insurance. Health care insurance did not offer benefits that offer mental health and substance use disorder covered under their insurance (HHS, 2021). This law passed offered those with a mental mood disorder recognition that mental health is an important part of wellness. HCA-DQ5-Reply
As healthcare professionals, it is crucial for nurses to understand the implication on how mental health is part of the wellness of the whole person. Working on a Behavioral Health acute in-patient hospital unit, I see first-hand how mental health affects the physical health of a person. This vulnerable population is at higher risk for many diseases and illness. Many are homeless and are addicted to substances and alcohol as a means to escape their reality living on the streets. Many times, these individuals feel hopeless and don’t know the many resources that can benefit them. They are still discriminated and are considered outcast in our modern society today. For example: according to the Department of Defense, individuals are disqualified from serving the U.S. military if they have a diagnosis or history of most mental disorders (Purse, 2021). Persons who want to serve their country are then forced not to report their mental illness or seek professional help. These rules were implemented to protect those in the military. Nurses should advocate for more efforts to identify HCA-DQ5-Reply mental illness in recruits, as well as those service members. Nurses should educate the public about lifesaving treatments. We need to foster a safe environment where people with a mental health disorder are not discriminated against or seen as unstable dangerous people. With treatment, many individuals who suffer from mood disorders can be a positive person who can contribute to society. There are many programs to help identify, understand, and respond to those with a mental health disorder. Some of these programs are for the general public and not restricted to healthcare professionals, such as Mental Health First Aid class which is managed by the National Council for Mental Health Wellbeing (National Counsel for Mental Wellbeing, 2022).
