In the ever-evolving area of nursing research, evaluating hypotheses that fall somewhere in the center is an essential component. The middle-range nursing theory attempts to bridge the gap between academic research and clinical application (Butcher, 2021). Compared to other kinds of theories, such as the grand nursing theories, middle-range approaches are simpler to execute, have a greater degree of specificity, and are characterized by a precise and constrained dimension. Theories that fall within the middle range are subjected to external and internal examination to determine their usefulness (Astley, 2019).

The connection of an idea and its relationship or union to well-being, persons, or nursing may be seen via the lens of external criticism directed at a theory. Internal critique of middle-range theories involves examining the inside arrangement of how the theory maintains unity amongst its many parts. The assessment process should consider internal and external criticism, even though the two types are distinct. The parameters for determining how well each theory holds up against internal and external scrutiny are different (Risjord, 2018). When conducting an internal critique, evaluating a method includes reviewing the approach’s logical development, consistency, clarity, and suitability (Risjord, 2018). On the other hand, the grounds for external critique include the approach’s usefulness, complexity, actuality, and breadth.

Internal critique assesses the middle range theory’s clarity as a first step. One example is checking if the evaluated method incorporates a theory’s core components (Risjord, 2018). Before putting the strategy into action, it is assessed to ensure that it has been fully grasped. Then, the theory’s consistency is used to provide concise explanations of the fundamental ideas, while the theory’s adequacy guarantees that there are no unaccounted-for holes in the logic (Risjord, 2018). After confirming the identity of all parties involved, the logical progression of the argument is taken into account to confirm its conclusion.

Risjord (2018) suggests that while evaluating a middle-range theory based on external critique, it is necessary first to identify how difficult it will be for readers to grasp the method before swiftly putting it into practice. The approach’s worth may be gauged based on how well it serves the nursing profession’s immediate needs. Another criterion used to ensure that a specific set of concepts is being used in a restricted context in nursing practice is the study’s scope (Risjord, 2018). Theorists make numerous assumptions; thus, it is essential to evaluate how well these predictions hold up to the scrutiny of the nursing practice community.

Evaluating Middle Range Theories Using Internal and External Critiques

Examination of middle-range theories is done by using internal and external criteria. Some of the questions addressed by internal criticism are whether the theory is consistent and if the approach has a logical flow. External criticism assessment then tests whether the assumptions made by the theories represent the actual world of nursing. Some ways to determine internal criticism include clarity, consistency, and logical development. While doing external critiquing, one considers how complicated the theory is, its efficacy, uniqueness, if it represents the real world, and its scope.Internal And External Criticism That Is Used To Evaluate Middle Range Theory

The criterion for the approach’s clarity is gauging how comprehensible the contents of the theory are and whether they obscure the topic of interest. The researchers in question are then tested on how quickly they comprehend the theory before using it practically (Fawcett et al., 2005). The consistency of the approach is then judged by ensuring the theory’s context and the subject matter are in harmony. Another way is to question if the concepts are cohesive and if the theory’s proposition is consistent in structure (Kolcaba et al., 2001). Regarding adequacy, the theory is tested whether further clarification is needed and whether unfilled gaps are established and rectified. Finally, through internal review, the ideas of the theory are tested if they lay out things in a coherent fashion.Internal And External Criticism That Is Used To Evaluate Middle Range Theory

For external critiquing, the question of complexity is brought out; it should be clear how many key components are in the theory. The middle-range nursing theories go ahead to be tested on how complicated they are, and using variables, their straightforwardness is determined (Peterson et al., 2020). As for efficacy, it should be lucid if the theory proves useful to the nurses carrying out research. By use of well-defined boundaries on the subject matter, the theory is supposed to distinguish between nursing and other medicine-related disciplines (Masters et al., 2012). More so, the assumptions are gauged if they represent the real world of nursing. External critique then tests out the scope of the theory by simply establishing if the range in question is narrow and if it makes the research any easier.Internal And External Criticism That Is Used To Evaluate Middle Range Theory

Conclusively the student learning outcomes that I observed in my post is:  Examine the influence that nursing models and theories have upon research and practice, the middle-range theory is a good option for practicing nurses and those conducting research. Using the evaluation criteria above, nurse researchers can gain insights into the strengths and weaknesses of the theory. Therefore, any researcher out there should conduct a rigorous analysis of the said theory before settling on it for research.Internal And External Criticism That Is Used To Evaluate Middle Range Theory
