Final Project

[WLO: 2] [CLO: 6]

In this assignment you will design a research-based, collaborative project to respond to a need or preference of a non-dominant learning community. Prior to completing this assignment, read Kumi-Yeboah & James (2011).

Instructions: To complete this assignment, you will need to do the following:

Part 1: Define Culturally Relevant Teaching.

  • Develop a workable definition of culturally relevant teaching incorporating the five essential elements of a culturally proficient instructor. (Week 1 Discussion Forum)
  • Develop a presentation on the necessities of addressing culture needs. (Week 1 Assignment)

Part 2: Identify the Need and Research.

  • Develop a questionnaire to identify cultural needs and resources. (Week 2 Assignment)
  • Identify a need in the learning community of your own post-secondary educational community. (Week 3 Discussion Forum and Reflective Journal)
  • Locate at least 10 research articles applicable to your need. (You already located 3 in your Week 3 Assignment and can use these)

Part 3: Develop the Benchmark Project.

You prepared a preliminary plan for your proposal in Week 4. You can expand on that plan here. Your project should include:

  • A brief literature review using the articles you located in Part 2.
  • An overview of the issue you are addressing.
  • The goal of project.
  • An evaluation of the needs of a learning community at a post-secondary educational institute.
  • An analysis of the demographics for the population of focus.
  • A discussion of the critical areas for improvement.
  • An overview of the methodology that will be used to carry out the project.
  • A proposed solution to the situation and how that solution will be carried out.
  • An overview of the resources that will be needed to carry out the project.

In addition, your assignment must:

  • Be 3300 to 5000 words in length, not counting abstract, title page, and reference page.
  • Use at least 10 scholarly and/or credible sources to support any claims, assertions, or conclusions.
    • Consult Scholarly, Peer Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources (Links to an external site.). This table offers additional guidance on appropriate source types. If you have questions about whether a specific source is appropriate for this assignment, please contact your instructor.
  • Provide references for all quoted, paraphrased, and summarized information from scholarly and/or credible sources both in-text and in an APA references list.
    • Consult the Writing Center’s In-Text Citation Guide (Links to an external site.) and website information about creating an APA Reference List (Links to an external site.) if needed.
  • Display attention to comprehension and organization of syntax and mechanics, including spelling and grammar.
    • Before you submit the assignment, use Grammarly, review all issues identified by Grammarly, and revise your work accordingly. If needed, review
    • This was done I week 4

      Project Plan

      [WLOs: 1, 4] [CLOs: 1, 2, 3, 6]

In Week 6 you will develop a proposal for project that addresses a need or preference of a non-dominant learning community. Prior to completing this assignment read Pope & Mueller (2005).Instructions: To complete this assignment, you will need to do the following:

      • Review the directions for the Week 6 assignment as well as your journal reflection from Week 3.
      • Develop a plan for how you will proceed with your project. Make sure you include process, methodology, and evaluation in your plan. This will carry over to your final project, so it is best to present as polished a product as possible to help for the end project.
      • Include elements of cultural proficiency necessary to accomplish the desired goals to the project.
      • You will have a title page and a two to three-paragraph summary of your project. Then, start to outline the steps you will be working on to complete the project.
        • Necessary sections will include process (series of steps), methodology (include specific interventions that will be necessary if applicable), and evaluation (how the project will be assessed to determine how well the project was/will be accomplished).
        • Remember all the information from the previous sessions can also be incorporated as necessary (definitions, questionnaires, etc.).
      • Include as many specifics as possible. Parts of the plan may even be in outline form as long as it is clear and specific. Remember APA frowns upon bullets, but enumeration is fine

      In addition, your assignment must:

      • The entire plan should be at least 1650 words (or five pages) long.
      • Use at least three scholarly and/or credible sources to support any claims, assertions, or conclusions.

    • David, I can see that you are working toward a research proposal and I want you to bring it back in and narrow it back down. You went from a small study at the beginning of the course to a giant study across the U.S. without having a clear focus as to a purpose or problem that needs to be studied. You have presented a great deal of information, but I am still not sure what it is you are doing or how you will do it. So, first step….think about what we have covered in this class. What is something you would like to understand. It does not need to be grand. For an example, look at the problem statement that Debbie and I hashed through in Week 4 Discussion 2. Without a solid problem statement, a study cannot unfold and it reads like a car that is trying to drive with all tires out of alignment. After you have identified a problem, how will you come to understand more about that problem? Will you survey? Will you interview people? You will be the only researcher. You do not have a full team of or a nation-wide research laboratory yet. Now, what does research say about this. I have found that when students are not sure, they have not read enough literature yet. What does literature say about your topic? What have been the common threads among all of the articles you have searched for class? Before you submit your next paper, I would like you to send it to the Writing Center. When you do, let them know that your instructor would like you to have assistance with making sure that there is: 1) a solid thesis statement; 2) flow that is aligned with the thesis statement and problem statement, and 3) that all topics in the paper stay within the boundaries of the topic. The Writing Center is GREAT at helping with this, but you have to tell them what you need help with. Otherwise, their feedback is general and unhelpful. I am happy to support you on this. However, there must be a solid problem statement. Send me an updated problem statement via Canvas inbox and we can work to narrow down your topic together.
