“White Lies” is an essay authored by Erin Murphy, who is a famous writer of poetry and narratives. The essay evaluates the extent of discrimination which is experienced in American schools. The author talks of a girl with albinism and the ridicules she went through because of her skin color. She did not react to any of the ridicule she went through. Also, their class teacher did not react or do anything to help the child who was undergoing discrimination. Other pupils started to like her after they found out that she could supply them with candy. They liked her for what she could provide but not what she was.
“Shame,” is an essay authored by Dick Gregory which is a reflection of his autobiography where he narrates the story of his childhood and how he went through a shameful moment at school. The little boy had a great life experience at home, but he never knew that being black would subject him to shame at school. He had fallen in love with one of her classmates, and he lived his life to impress her. One day they were contributing for a community initiative, and their teacher appreciated all the little contributions made by the white children but did not even call Gregory’s name. When Gregory stood to remind him of the contribution that his father gave him, the teacher turned him down on the basis of his race. A Sense of Self. Being black, the teacher thought of him as a boy from a low-income family who cannot contribute.

Langston Hughes was an African American who played an important role in the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. Hughes was a writer who contributed massively through his columns in The New York Post and The African American weekly. His essay Reflecting on what you know breaks down the concept of religion and the role it plays in the life of individuals. Hughes narrates his personal idea and encounter with salvation. As a kid, he attended church with his aunt who repeatedly told her to get saved. So one day, out of pressure from everybody else during the church service, he decides to get salvation since everyone else had stood up to get saved. He further narrates that on the night that he got saved, he cried alone but when his aunt heard him cry, she told her that it was the Holy Spirit taking over him, and that he had seen Jesus. The truth is that he was crying because he had lied to his aunt and to the congregation in the church and that he had not seen Jesus, neither does he believe his existence. A Sense of Self.
