Paloma Hernandez is a 26-year-old, Spanish-speaking patient who presents to the clinic for the last 2 days in a row complaining of abdominal pain that is getting worse. On the first visit, the staff relied on her younger bilingual daughter to translate. She was treated with Omeprazole and encouraged to take OTC medication. Today she presents with the same problem. Her daughter states it is the same problem but worse today.

In the Latino Hispanic culture using a child to translate for the adult is the last resort. This exchange of information will make the patient feel demeaned and disrespected. In their culture, it is a power exchange that should not happen. The use of blue phones in the hospital can be an essential resource for communicating. Unfortunately, not all facilities have them or utilize them. Google translate has an application where it translates in real-time. Complications can arise however technology can cause miscommunication (Gast & Hunt, 2020). This should be used as a last resort as well. Every facility should have translator guidance whenever needed. In the Latino Hispanic culture, they value family and may require lots of family at the bedside when making big decisions about their care plans. Christianity is part of their lifestyle. The patient will have religious items at the bedside during their stay. Food is important in the healing process. Some families will have a list of food that cause illness that is passed from generation to generation (CDC, 2020). Communicating verbally while maintaining eye contact is a sign of respect, however maintaining eye contact while being quiet is a sign of intimidation. To help alleviate any stressful times of care during the patient’s stay. The healthcare team can involve the older members of the family with the patient’s plan of care during inpatient treatment.
