Latanya Coffee is a 40-year-old student nurse making a home visit for her public health rotation. She has been assigned to do a home visit to Joan Abah and her family. Ms. Abah is a 30-year-old Hispanic mother of four children. The children are 18 months and 5, 7, and 12 years of age. Her 78-year-old grandmother lives with the family, is in poor health, and requires assistance in activities of daily living. Ms. Abah does not work outside the home and receives government assistance. The children’s father moved away and provides no support. When Nurse Coffee visits Ms. Abah, she also finds the two younger children at home with the grandmother. Nurse Coffee explains to Ms. Abah that she is there to perform a safety assessment of the home environment and help Ms. Abah develop plans that may help her.
