For this week’s discussion prompt, it about a case study titled “Where Do You Live? Health Disparities Across the United States. According to Buchbinder and Shanks, “ there’s an ethical judgement of fairness of a health disparity and whether one is avoidable leads to the sometimes subjective nature of the term; this means that a health disparity will signify a difference in access, utilization, quality of care, and health status and health outcome between groups”, (Buchbinder &Shanks, 2017). Health disparities mainly focuses on specific racial/ethnic group minorities such as African Americans and Hispanics, and homeless people, which prevents them to get proper care.

In the United States, health disparities such as “kidney dialysis” rates, cervical and colon cancer, have increased in poor neighborhoods due to having no access to care, greater exposure to environmental toxins, and the way of living (Sayre & Preidt, 2015). I believe providing a better lifestyle to homeless and elderly people, access to proper health insurance such Medical and Medicare, improvement in patient care and positive outcome to all women in the United States to avoid mortality can improve health and save lives. Health Policies should also be used at all healthcare facilities to ensure the culture competency within a community is used to improve patient care and eliminate health disparities in the minority neighborhood.

If I was a health educator working for the state Department of Public Health, to help hospitals in the geographic region address these health disparities, I would recommend them to follow and use National Standards guidelines on Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS). Guidelines such as Principal Standard, Governance, Leadership, and Workforce, Communication and Language Assistance, and Engagement, Continuous Improvement, and Accountability, (Buchbinder and Shanks, 2017). I will so advise the hospital to practice “Cultural proficiency” to improve standard of care in delivering quality services, (Buchbinder and Shanks, 2017). As a health educator I must recognize the issues of health disparities within the community and providing essential components of cultural proficiency. Some of the components will include “Education and training for all staff, a diverse health care workforce, assessments, effective multilingual services and support materials and the ability to adapt to the context of and respond to and engage the community”, (Buchbinder and Shanks, 2017).

When the health and medical field are presented with population dilemmas that involve ratios of health concerns, everyone quickly becomes an expert on what the professionals and city officials should do. We as the members of society operate on what we would like to happen for ourselves and love ones, in reality that is not the case. Those in charge of health, medical, ad budgeting for this area of life it is all a numbers game. Meaning, just because we the people feel this is what should be done to fix problem x, y, and z that is not necessarily the case for those deeply involved from the money aspect of things. With that being said, I do feel as though there needs to a happy medium met in a sense that, officials should first and foremost do what is medically best for all and worry about the budget and cost effectiveness second. If the shoe were on the other foot the officials would want any and all measures to be taken to save themselves and loved ones, with that in mind and that being said that is how medical needs should be addressed and met. Yes, I understand that money is made off of sick people, but when did money become more important and more valued than human life? I would personally ensure that there was more active and preventive care being done in order to improve the lives of those in a community in order to decrease the uneven levels of healthy vs nonhealthy based on demographics. If there are more preventive measures and treatments happening then in the long run, money would be saved, more hospitals and facilities would be thriving, and extra time money and resources could be used to find cure for things out in the world today like PCOS or Cancer. If there is one thing that I have learned from having all of my animals on active prevention medical plans is that the way pets are handled medically should be transferred over to how we take care of ourselves as humans. If things were priced fairly and accordingly to demographics then there would be more people inclined to seek medical treatment thus still bringing in money. Hospitals and medical facilities do not need to be ran and thought about in the same way we do prisons. Meaning, for very body in a cell at a prison they make money off of that person. In my own experiences it has felt that way in some medical facilities. The more often they can have me return, the longer they can take to treat me, the more money they make.
