Week 6 Discussion Question #6

Chapter 30 in your textbook deals with Home Health and Hospice Care

Please review Chapter 30, read the information below on Compassion Fatigue, and answer the questions below

BOX 30-9 Evidence-Based Practice

Nurses and Compassion Fatigue

Do you wonder how hospice nurses sustain compassionate practice as they work every day with suffering patients who always die? Expert hospice nurses embrace the suffering of the client and family and become susceptible to compassion fatigue. Compassion fatigue is often viewed as secondary stress. It is the stress felt by the caregiver from exposure to a traumatization.  Home Health and Hospice Care Assignment.Nurses often describe this as overload. Although signs of compassion fatigue are individualized, they often include exhaustion and a reduced ability to express empathy for the client. This may result in withdrawal by the nurse emotionally from the client and family, as well as the role of nurse.

Staying psychologically as well as physically healthy as a hospice nurse requires a high level of self-awareness. Nurses must be aware of the signs and symptoms that they may have a tendency to exhibit.  Home Health and Hospice Care Assignment.Symptoms are individualized based on how a particular nurse adapted to stress in the past and are often subject to developmental, spiritual, cultural, and environmental influences. Recognition of the symptoms allows the hospice nurse to institute stress-relieving activities early in the process. According to the Compassion Fatigue Awareness Project (2017), some symptoms that a nurse may experience include the following:

Isolating oneself; poor self-care (appearance, hygiene)
Repressed emotions; apathy; mentally/physically exhausted
Always finding blame with others; many complaints about job/administration
Substance abuse; compulsive behaviors (e.g., eating, spending, gambling) Home Health and Hospice Care Assignment

In debt; legal problems; recurrent flashbacks/nightmares; chronic health problems
Problems concentrating; feeling preoccupied; denies problems
Compassion fatigue can affect an agency, if enough nurses suffer from the problem and nothing is done to assist them. It can cause problems between nurses and administrators, lead to high turnover and absenteeism, and lead to self-perpetuation. Organizations may exhibit these symptoms:

Poor teamwork; high absentee rates; continually changing coworker relationships
Challenging/breaking agency rules; aggression among staff members
Poor task/assignment completion; unable to meet deadlines; lack of flexibility
Negative feelings toward management; reluctance toward change
Poor vision of future; not able to believe that improvements can be made
(Compassion Fatigue Awareness Project, 2017) Home Health and Hospice Care Assignment

Compassion fatigue is not isolated to hospice nurses. All nurses are susceptible to the effects. This may lead to higher rates of turnover and an increase in the nursing shortage as nurses leave the profession.

Often, caregivers experiencing compassion fatigue are unable to identify it in themselves.

Answer EACH question below:

1. What ways can you identify compassion fatigue in others?

2. What recommendations can you make to reduce compassion fatigue for yourself?

3. How can you transform your organization to reduce compassion fatigue?

Gordon’s functional health patterns Assignment

Growth And Development

“Gordon’s functional health patterns” provide a thorough framework for examining the growth as well as developmental patterns of two children of distinct ages. This strategy includes many elements that may be used with toddlers and sheds insight into their general health and well-being. Let’s investigate these elements in relation to the two young children. Gordon’s functional health patterns Assignment

The first part is called “Health Perception-Health Management.” Around 12-month-old toddlers may have a poor awareness of health. They largely depend on their careers to manage their health, including scheduling routine checkups and immunizations. A child, on the other hand, starts to get a basic sense of health when they are around 36 months old. They may reveal dietary preferences or demonstrate independence in simple self-care tasks like cleaning their teeth . The second part, “Nutritional-Metabolic,” is concerned with the toddlers’ eating habits. A toddler who is 12 months old often switches from breast milk or formula to solid meals as they experience fast development and a rise in their nutritional requirements. In order to provide a balanced diet, parents or other caregivers must introduce a range of foods while keeping an eye out for allergies. Toddlers continue to develop their eating habits around 36 months, and they may start to show preferences for certain foods. They could begin demonstrating their independence by using cutlery, tasting various foods, and experimenting with flavors and textures (Cameron & Schell, 2021; Edelman & Kudzma, 2021). The toddlers’ bowel and urine habits are addressed in the third part, “Elimination.” A 12-month-old child is probably making the switch from using diapers to using the toilet. Through assistance and direction from their caretakers, they will be helped to develop regular restroom practices. Most toddlers can use the toilet independently by the time they are 36 months old, however others still have occasional accidents. The fourth element, “Activity-Exercise,” focuses on the physical development and play styles of the children. Gross motor abilities including crawling, standing, and cruising around furniture are being developed in a 12-month-old child. They need plenty of chances to roam about as they playfully investigate their surroundings. Toddlers have better developed gross and fine motor abilities around 36 months old, including the ability to run, jump, and use crayons. They engage in activities that encourage physical coordination and social engagement as their play grows more creative and participatory (Cameron & Schell, 2021; Edelman & Kudzma, 2021). Gordon’s functional health patterns Assignment

The final element, “Sleep-Rest,” takes into account the kids’ sleep and rest schedules. A child that is 12 months old normally naps throughout the day and snoozes more soundly at night. For their wellbeing, a regular sleep routine must be established. By the age of 36 months, children often need less sleep during the day and have a more regular sleep schedule at night, which typically entails one nap and a lengthier overnight sleep. The last part, “Cognitive-Perceptual,” looks at the toddlers’ sensory and cognitive development. A 12-month-old child begins to comprehend cause-and-effect linkages as they investigate items via touch, taste, and sound. They solve simple puzzles by putting shapes in the appropriate slots. Toddlers show tremendous cognitive development at 36 months old, including enlarged vocabulary, greater memory, and improved problem-solving skills. They play imaginatively, comprehend fundamental ideas like size and amount, and have a greater interest in reading and storytelling (Cameron & Schell, 2021; Edelman & Kudzma, 2021). Health Advocacy Assignment

Health advocacy is of utmost importance in influencing the provision of quality and safe care to patients. The process influences the development of favorable policies that promote meeting patients’ expectations. Nurses must know the expected outcome to advocate for patients. Since I became a nurse, I have been involved in promoting healthcare for the community; for example, I actively use social media platforms to educate the public regarding various health conditions and their prevention methods.  Health Advocacy Assignment.Besides, I have been taking initiatives within the agency I work for by voting for leaders who are interested in the improvement of healthcare services. Motivating other nurses to vote for the right leaders has influenced the development of appropriate policies. I believe that good health starts with the election of the right leaders who are concerned with well-being and population health.

COVID-19 came at a time when no one was expecting it and caused a devastating impact on public health. There were lacked policies to guide the decision-making process or support the management of patients. At this time, collaborating with other professionals was an immediate intervention required to reduce negative implications. Advocating for the development of vaccines to reduce the spread and lower the harm caused by the virus was crucial during that time. Advocacy enabled timely vaccine provision and public education to encourage many people to accept and receive it. The pandemic made me realize that nursing is not limited to the hospital setting. The advocacy influenced the government to support the transportation of the vaccine to every corner of the country (Iriarte‐Roteta et al., 2020). Public education in social places helped eliminate fear and misconceptions regarding the vaccine and supported making informed decisions. Although many hesitated to receive the injection, effective advocacy enabled them to develop a positive attitude and eventually receive it. Health Advocacy Assignment

Nurses must show determination in advocating for the right of patients and providing beneficial information. Interacting with political leaders can enable them to understand the importance of improving healthcare policies and supporting measures to prevent diseases. Nurses have a role to play in the development of policies (Turale & Kunaviktikul, 2019). Since nurses interact with patients more than other practitioners, they are better placed to correct more information regarding patient issues. In my opinion, nurses should use their knowledge to guide political decisions.

Communicating with political leaders can help create awareness and enable leaders to understand the situation. The affordable care act is one of the policies developed following effective advocacy (Turale & Kunaviktikul, 2019). Nurses influenced the government to reduce the cost of treatment and make healthcare services more accessible and affordable.  Health Advocacy Assignment
