Description:
Visiting a shop to see collections and current trends is one of the best ways to be well informed. This assignment emphasises the importance of shop reports and market analysis.
The shop-reports meant to keep you up-to-date with market trends of garment construction, finishing techniques, fabrics, colour stories, merchandising, what is selling at retail, what’s on the sale and what customers are responding to most.
This practice is utilised by designers working within commercial design companies that launch new ranges continuously. Comparing Between Chanel and BCBG.
Task
Analyse the collections sold and the retail shop experience.
Select two women evening wear brands from two different market levels, for example, one being at designer level and the other from Mass market level.

Evening Women Wear
Introduction
BCBG is an American clothing fashion mainly stocking female/women designs of clothes from across different designer brand factories. Chanel is a French fashion and design company and store that was started by a French fashion fusionist called Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel in 1921. Back then till late in the 1980s, Chanel only dealt in designer perfumes and makeup. (Monroe, 2012) While Chanel deals mostly in the line of fabric clothing like dresses and gowns and mostly bags and makeup accessories, BCBG has greatly diversified on its line of stock, ranging from female shoes, accessories, all types of trending fashion fabrics, bags, sunglasses, and many others Comparing Between Chanel and BCBG . The brainchild behind the starting of BCBG in 1989 was a Tunisian-born designer called Max Azria; He is now the chairperson and Chie executive of the BCBG fashion shops. The initials BCBG were borrowed from the French slung “bon chic bon genre” which means “good style good attitude,” over time, BCBG has emerged to be one of the bestselling fashion shops globally. Chanel fashion stores currently stock a wide range of women wears from its shops found all around the world. These include Chanel dresses, knitwear, cardigans, wool coats, and slim pants, every taste of skirts ranging from miniskirts to office skirts, jackets for women, jumpers, blazers, tweed jackets and every kind of fabric wear for women. Besides, Chanel currently has also fully ventured in women handbags, women shoes ranging from the simplest sandals to official footwear; women watch as well as makeup accessories marked with their brand Comparing Between Chanel and BCBG . Besides selling from the leading brands, Chanel brands some of the products customized to their specific demands and sells them under their brands.
BCBG on the other hand stocks a variety of women clothing supplemented with shoes, bags, accessories, and jewelry. BCBG has made a name locally in the USA as the home of dresses. They stock a wide variety of fancy dresses from the biggest designer companies in the world, besides selling their designs.
Evening Wear for Women
On visiting both BCBG and Chanel fashion stores for women, I did a study on the shop layout, variety and line of products in stock, the comparative range of prices as well as the market trends. Two types of evening wear were selected from both Chanel and BCBG shops, one representing the designer class while the other representing the mass wear class. Assessment on every aspect of the evening wear was done.

At a BCBG shop, the environment has many fashion stores, selling at almost similar prices hence high competition and the prices are affordable. A plus size extra-long Lalagen short sleeved women dress was selected to represent the designer class. The color was black, with a beautifully finished rhinestone bodice design at the front. Replaceable rhinestone pieces also supplied along at the time of purchase. There was only one piece of this magnificent dress at the time of our survey. This dinner dress is perfect when complemented with glittering jewelry and an exquisite clutch bag. The marked prize of this dress was $33.99. The brand was Lalagen (Garza, 2018)
Evening wear that represented the mass market level at the BCBG was a black nude illusion V-neck evening dress priced at $11.48. This dress is made of lace bodice and has a complete V-neck with complete bear back to enhance a sexy look Comparing Between Chanel and BCBG . Also, the glam would come out with when complemented with high heels and shining jewelry. The designer is Illusion, an American designer. There were 21 pieces of this dinner dress on the rack at the time of our survey.
At the Chanel shop, the environment was cozy. The shop lighting and background music sooth customers as shopping go on. Chanel shops are mainly found in fancy malls, placed strategically at the base of the elevators. There is a considerable amount of class, reflected in the prices which are far higher than at BCBG shops. An evening garment that was selected to represent the designer class was a Lulu One Shoulder Jumpsuit that cost $445. It was a one-shoulder neckline jumpsuit, sleeveless and elastic waistline. The jumpsuit possesses side slit pockets and a concealed side zip with hook closure. The preferred color was blue. Six pieces were available at the shop. (Garza, 2018)
An Adrianna Papell Beaded Blouson gown that cost $84.99 was selected at a Chanel shop to represent a mass market level. It was a bra friendly round neck made of blouson bodice, a seamed waist, and a line skirt. The material is polyester with allover bead-embellished mesh overlay.
