Short Paper 1 Due Monday 6/10 11:59 pm PST I. Goal of Paper The goal of this paper is for you to apply what you’ve learned this week to a real-life business scenario. It’s basically a written, individual version of what you’re doing in your discussion. Like the discussion, write as if you’re providing advice to the person (or persons or corporation) facing the decision. It’s also building you up to the final project. Here are the general instructions: • Aim for 500-750 words. You really should not have to go over 750 words. • Submit your paper on Canvas under Assignments. • Please anonymize your paper by removing your name from the file and the file name! (When possible, I try to grade anonymously to try to mitigate any implicit biases I may have.) • The paper is due Monday 6/10. If you’re having difficulty with it (I understand that for many of you this is likely your first philosophy or business ethics paper), please contact me as soon as possible so we can make sure you’re on the right track! II. Picking the Business Scenario You are free to pick any business scenario that interests you. (Exception!: You cannot use one of the case studies from the textbook.) It can be based on personal experiences, be a fictional scenario (perhaps borrowed from a book or movie), or about a current event. Just make sure that you provide enough basic detail so that someone not familiar with the situation understands what’s going on. III. Content Include all of the following content in your paper. Points and length suggestions are included a. Moral Question and Position (2 pts) • Clearly state the question that you are investigating. Also, clearly state your answer to the question. • This should appear immediately at the beginning of the paper • Suggested length: 2-3 sentences b. Background Facts (2 pts) • Summarize the relevant factual points in your scenario. • If your scenario is drawn from a current event, include a citation or link to the story you’re working on. • Suggested length: 1 paragraph c. Discuss who the affected parties are and what their interests are. (2 pts) • There should be at least two affected parties. • Suggested length: 1 paragraph d. Relevant Potential Consequences (2 pts) • Discuss the potential consequences. (There should be at least two.) • Things to consider when thinking about potential consequences are who is affected, how good/bad the outcomes are, and how likely they are to occur. • Suggested length: 1 paragraph e. Relevant Duties (2 pts) • Discuss the relevant duties. (There should be at least two.) • Things to consider when thinking about relevant duties are whether this duty has universal acceptability, is a duty we would want everyone to uphold, etc. • Suggested length: 1 paragraph f. Argument (4 pts) • Give an argument for the answer to your question. o Note 1: Remember, this is an exercise in moral reasoning where you arrive at a particular moral judgment (i.e., the answer to your question). Presumably, that means that some of your premises should involve general moral principles and some should involve factual claims. o Note 2: Also remember that the best arguments are sound arguments! So try to make sure that your premises guarantee your conclusion, and that your premises are in true (or likely to be accepted as true). • Suggested length: 1 paragraph g. Other (1 pt each) • Organization o Make sure that your paper is organized. o You can use sections headings such as “Question” or “Background” if you’d like. • Clarity o Write so that all of your points are clear to the reader. If it helps, imagine that your reader is one of your classmates. • Citations o If you use any outside resources, cite them. You don’t have to worry about citation format, just include a footnote that says where you got the idea or information. o If you use outside resources, include a bibliography at the end. IV.
