In my facility care, HCAHPS drive what new policies are created and how old procedures can be revamped to gain higher scores. We are told at every staff meeting how important it is for our patients to walk away feeling as if they received excellent care, not just “very good” care. The patient satisfaction scores very much impact us and our competency as nurses are tied to these reviews. While I love hearing all feedback, there are some people that will never be satisfied and I feel sometimes too much emphasis is placed on the few bad experiences versus the many excellent ones. Both hospitals that I visit, have multiple problems that affect patient outcomes. My individuals are developmentally disabled and so they cannot speak for themselves, they have suffered from these issues for years. I have been their advocate for almost nine years and now I am the lead advocate over all the hospital liaisons for the entire state of Texas. We all see the same issues and the Medicare compare website showed exactly that. Both of my hospitals scored about the same in overall scores and patient surveys, but there was a significant difference in timely care and poor patient outcomes. Per Medicare.gov (2022), CHI had poorer outcomes than Woodland Heights with death rates of 18.4% vs 13.9% and infection rates of 1.416 vs 0.770.
From what I have seen at my daily visits to these hospitals, they need improved management. Since COVID has hit the management has gone downhill and nurse morale has hit an all-time low. The infection rate and serious complications are at a higher level partially because of staffing issues, not only did these hospitals lose nurses due to COVID but also because of nursing management. I would try to obtain more nurse managers to have smaller units and more oversight to assist the nurses when problems arise. Then morale would come up and turn over would decrease and thus patient outcomes would improve. Nursing
