Theoretical Framework Model
A theoretical framework is a structure that supports a theory of a research study. The theoretical framework helps explain the phenomena, draw the connections, and make predictions on the outcome. The model I choose to incorporate into my project is Jean Watson’s Caring Theory. The Theory of Human Caring by Jean Watson is a middle-range theory that focuses on the patient-nurse relationship (Watson & Woodward, 2020). It emphasizes treating the patient as a whole, which entails taking care of the patient’s mind, spirit, and body so that the healing process may continue at its best. Dr. Watson proposes three strong primary aspects: carative, caring interpersonal relations, and caring circumstances/caring instances (Gunawan et al., 2022). Essentially, this theory situates the client within the framework of their family, community, and culture. It also emphasizes the importance of the client over the technology.NURSING RESEARCH
Jean Watson’s concept is based on the philosophy and science of caring, which helps patients improve their health. As a nurse, I’ve always been trained to put my patients in the best possible situation to allow them to recover themselves. As a nurse, I am required to participate in inpatient care. Caring has several advantages, and it promotes self-absorption on both a professional and personal level (Watson & Woodward, 2020). Watson’s concept aligns with the nursing profession’s concept of care. This model relates to my project in caring for patients with pressure ulcers and determining the best procedure for managing pressure ulcers for patients aged above 60 years. The prevalence of pressure ulcers is estimated to be between 7 and 12 percent based on epidemiological research. Around 71 percent of these people aged 60 and over are considered at a greater risk of having this disease.NURSING RESEARCH
Jean Watson’s theory will help me compare negative pressure wound therapy and standard moist therapy in treating pressure ulcers among the elderly. In addition, it will help determine the effectiveness of negative wound therapy in improving the healing of pressure ulcers in the elderly. When in hospital, patients are mostly lying-in bed, not moving around, and therefore many can develop pressure wounds (Watson & Woodward, 2020). Taking care of them is essential, and the method utilized to care for the wounds has a significant impact on how long it takes for the wound to heal. Negative wound pressure therapy and standard moist wound therapy are two wound treatment options. My research will show how employing negative wound pressure therapy instead of standard wet wound pressure therapy can help patients over 60 years recover from pressure wounds.NURSING RESEARCH
Does the Model Lend Itself to Quantitative or Qualitative Methods or Both?
The theory of Jean Watson is based on qualitative research. Qualitative research comprises gathering and evaluating non-numerical data in order to comprehend experiences, viewpoints or concepts. It may be utilized to gain a deeper comprehension of a topic or to come up with new research ideas (Umanailo et al., 2019). Qualitative research techniques allow for in-depth questioning and inquiry of individuals depending on their responses, with the interviewer/researcher also critically examining their purpose and feelings. Appropriate Qualitative Methods
I’ll use a variety of qualitative research methodologies for this project like content analysis, surveys, ethnographic research, focus groups, and one-on-one interviews. One-on-one interviews are solely conversational and allow for in-depth questions from the responder (Duneier, 2019). This method is ideal for gathering precise information about what people believe and why. Focus groups are ideal for providing in-depth information in a short amount of time. Focus groups allow you to get into respondent attitudes and beliefs in ways that other approaches cannot.
The most complete observational technique for researching individuals in their natural surroundings is ethnographic research. The goal of this research is to learn about the many cultures, issues, motivations, and settings that may develop (Duneier, 2019). You see the natural environment firsthand rather than depending on interviews and conversations. Surveys will aid in developing a hypothesis, which will be evaluated via qualitative research. Surveys are a practical approach for data collection and a quick method to receive the results I need.NURSING RESEARCH
Theoretical framework and critique
Using the Jean Watson’s theory, which puts great emphasis on caring for the patients, the nursing staff will be evaluated on how they can care for their patients in the most effective ways, such as using negative pressure wound therapy rather than the standard moist therapy. The goal of this evaluation is to speed up the healing process for patients suffering from pressure ulcers, with a particular emphasis on patients who are above sixty years (Portney, 2020). This approach is appropriate for the endeavor since it reminds and supports the nurses to make care the primary focus of all actions and thoughts when they are working. This will ensure that the individuals with pressure ulcers receive better care, which will ultimately improve their health. In addition, the nurse is in a better position to concentrate on the spiritual benefits that come from being able to play a role in the recovery process of elderly patients if she uses this model as a guide for providing care. It is expected that this will strengthen the nurse’s opinion of the overall value of his or her career, which may improve level of job satisfaction, ultimately leading to an improvement in the rate at which clients recuperate.
However, it is debatable whether a model like this can be implemented in today’s healthcare climate, where the goal of care is often to deliver high quality while keeping costs low. A high level of acuity may make it difficult for caregivers to build personal and spiritual connections with the elderly individuals they care for.
Aspects of the Model That Works Well, And What Aspects Do Not.
Watson’s concept is implemented using carative aspects or caratas procedures. Formulating humanistic-altruistic value approaches, inculcating faith-hope, and fostering sensitivity individually and to others are all elements of the framework that perform well. These factors are simple to implement and form the foundation of the model, resulting in successful applications. Elements that do not work well include helping with human requirement gratification and enabling for existential-phenomenological powers (Gunawan et al., 2022). These factors are hard to apply therefore leading to their unsuccessful application.NURSING RESEARCH
Conclusion
The provision of nursing care benefits from and is significantly influenced by Watson’s theory of human caring which offers a metaphysical direction. The use of individual, patient-identified requirements, the caring processes, and the inner notion of being human are some of Watson’s theoretical aspects that may assist caregivers and their clients in having a purpose and harmony throughout times of rising complexities.
