Statistics is the science of using math to collect and analyze numeric data, identify trends, and create evidence-based practice (Helbig & Ambrose, 2018). Statistics in healthcare is used to support empirical data to either support or disprove a hypothesis.Post Florence Nightingale used statistics to prove her correlation between sanitation and a decrease in mortality. By using quantifiable evidence, it was irrefutable and thus created a trend in the industry that is followed to this day.

William Augustus Guy was a doctor in the 1800s that developed statistics for forensic medicine and his theories are used to this day (Brown, 2019). His book, “Principles of Forensic Medicine”, laid the foundation of probability in modern day forensics.
