Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:
When you decide to pursue a program in an academic institution, the first step to take is to be close to those people who understand the program and who can guide you on how to successfully complete that program. I believe the program directors are the people I should consult when my academic plans are not going as expected. They have in-depth experience on the program and its challenges. The program directors within the university are aware of the program structure in the institution and the learning environment. Therefore, I believe partnering with them will be an advantage to my success in the program and my practice as a nurse. They will guide me on the various books and articles that I need to improve my skills and knowledge as a nurse.Professional Development

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:
Zhang and Cui (2018) assert that flexibility and success in nursing are determined by the ability of nursing students and nurses to collaborate with their colleagues in their programs. Nursing students undertaking similar programs should work on challenges together and explore problems from different perspectives. This will create an environment of teamwork and creativity that will make it easy for the nurses work together and help each other in solving problems. I believe my MSN colleagues will help me address difficulties and counter challenges that will arise during the program. I will have people I can depend on and share my difficulties with. This will make the journey easy and successful. We will also be able to form future networks that involve learning from each other and uplifting one another in the profession.

When doing my research about the nursing profession, I always come across the American Nursing Association being mentioned almost in every nursing journal article and books. One of the articles by Pearce et al., (2018) indicates that ANA has been an important source of information for nurses. Through the association, nurses are able tounderstand the demands of the nursing practice, the shifts that take place in nursing, and strategies of success in the profession. The association has members who are professionals in nursing, and I believe they will mentor me to become the best nurse practitioner. I believe I will benefit a lot from the profession and ANA will help me expand my knowledge and skills in nursing.

Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity

Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity

There is a strong ethical relationship between academic integrity and writing. This is because, in academic writing, one is required to use information written by others and still produce an original copy of their work devoid of plagiarism.  Since one uses other people’s information, materials ideas, words, and work, they can be tempted to copy and paste which is unethical (Morris, 2016). Another unethical issue in writing is using these words, work, and ideas and failing to acknowledge the authors or give them any kind of credit. Therefore, to maintain one’s academic integrity, it is crucial to acknowledge others. Academic integrity is important because it enables a writer to contribute to a certain topic and discipline using his or her voice. Academic integrity in writing requires a writer to be honest, fair, respectful, responsible, and trustworthy. Issues concerning academic integrity are closely related because academic integrity requires a writer to acknowledge sources where they obtained information.

Relationship between Professional Practices and Scholarly Ethics

There is an interdependent relationship between scholarly ethics and professional practices.  These two are connected because they build each other. According to de Gaaf (2019), someone who possesses strong scholarly ethics has a high likelihood of having strong skills that influence their professional practice positively. Professional practices can be described as conduct and behaviors that guide someone in a certain career or profession on how they should present themselves at their place of work.  On the other hand, scholarly ethics is the integrity that governs research and academic work such as exams and class work (Evetts, 2014). By practicing scholarly ethics, a profession gains confidence and becomes creative in the way they work leading to better professional practice.

Contribution of Grammarly, Safe Assign, and Paraphrasing to Academic Integrity

Grammarly, Safe Assign, and paraphrasing are crucial tools that contribute to academic integrity. Grammarly is a grammar checker tool that helps writers avoid grammar mistakes, typos, and spelling mistakes. It also helps in proofreading and editing written documents by discovering punctuation and grammar mistakes and gives a writer a chance to correct them by offering suggestions on how to correct them. Apart from checking for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors, Grammarly highlights plagiarism by checking for the similarity of the document with other written documents across the globe (Fitria, 2021).

A safe Assign is a tool that helps prevent plagiarism. This tool contributes to academic integrity by preserving students’ papers from becoming a part of a global database without their permission. It also checks for plagiarism from student papers by comparing their similarity to that of other Internet sources. Paraphrasing contributes to academic integrity by allowing students to use other people’s work and making it their own by avoiding plagiarism. Paraphrasing helps students or writers understand other person’s content and paraphrase it to achieve academic integrity. Paraphrasing is ethical and helps avoids plagiarism by understanding another person’s work enough to interpret it and make it your own.

PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work

Strategies to Maintain Integrity and Ethics of Academic Work

There are several strategies that I can apply to promote work integrity and ethics. These strategies include applying high integrity standards in my academic work and being a professional in my nursing career. As an MSN program student, I intend to maintain high integrity and ethical standards in my academic work by avoiding plagiarism and utilizing ethical plagiarism where I acknowledge other people’s ideas and work. By properly referencing and citing other people’s work, I can achieve academic integrity by giving credit where it’s due and avoiding plagiarism. By paraphrasing, proper punctuation and sentence structure, the quality of my academic work will improve. In achieving this goal, I will always strive to complete my assignments on time and prepare myself adequately to tackle classwork and exams. I will also constantly consult my nursing lecturers in areas of my course I find challenging. This will help me understand the coursework and motivate me to do more research and expand my horizon by studying materials relevant to my program. I also intend to have a professional relevant to my course as my mentor to help me reconcile my coursework with real life work.

As a nursing professional, I will continue pursuing educational courses to keep up with the ever-changing work environment and setting due to technological advancements and globalization. Through the continued learning process, as a nurse, I can adapt to the dynamics of the nursing environment. As a nurse, maintaining integrity and being ethical is an important part of the job and therefore I will ensure that am competent, empathetic, honest, trustworthy, and patient to handle difficult, challenging, and critically ill patients (Gazza et al., 2018). I also intend to carry out my duties, obligations, and responsibilities with the utmost ethical standards.

Review of Resources to Use as a Professional and a Student

As a student, I intend to use resources such as technology, practical lessons, and library materials. As a nurse practitioner, I intend to utilize resources such as following the code of ethics, further training on State and Professional Association continued educational courses, attend nursing seminars and workshops to improve my professional skills and increase my nursing knowledge.

Topic of Interest:

PTSD in U.S. veterans: The role of social connectedness, combat experience, and discharge.

Research Article: Include full citation in APA format, as well as link or search details (such as DOI)

Kintzle, S., Barr, N., Corletto, G., & Castro, C. A. (2018). PTSD in U.S. veterans: The role of social connectedness, combat experience, and discharge. Healthcare (Basel, Switzerland), 6(3), 102. https://doi.org/10.3390/healthcare6030102

Professional Practice Use:
One or more professional practice uses of the theories/concepts presented in the article

The theories and concepts used in the article can be used in professional practice in managing PTSD among veterans. The article identifies major factors that contribute to PTSD among U.S. veterans such as exposure to combat, social connectedness, and discharge status from the military. This knowledge can be used in PTSD prevention by developing mechanisms to control the contributing factors. The article used the theory of self-psychology to measure components of social connectedness, focusing on feelings of belonging.

The theory helps mental health practitioners to understand the sources of difficulties that individuals experience, such as issues with maintenance of social cohesion and regulation of self-esteem. The article’s findings indicated that combat exposure and experiences as the major factors contributing to the development of PTSD symptoms.

The findings indicate the need for greater care for individuals who have had prolonged combat experiences and experiences to reduce the risk of developing PTSD. The researchers established that social connectedness has direct effects on PTSD symptoms, and positive effects on combat exposure and non-honorable discharge status on PTSD symptoms (Kintzleet al., 2018). This evidence can be applied by mental health practitioners to control PTSD in veterans by encouraging social connectedness.

Strengths of the Research

Limitations of the Research

Relevancy to Topic of Interest

Notes

The strengths of the research included good organization as the study was well organized to meet its purpose.

The research had various limitations including the setting of the study as the data used in the study was collected from veterans in a single place in San Francisco Bay Area.

The topic investigated in the research is relevant to professional practice as PTSD is a major health concern among Veterans.

The research was funded by Wells Fargo. The study employed quantitative research methods to determine the relationship that exists between the variables of the study.

The author acknowledges that the study does not connect the negative outcomes of PTSD caused by the concepts described in the study to Veterans

The research examined the risk factors of PTSD symptoms among veterans by exploring combat exposure, social connectedness, and discharge status.

The quantitative methodology makes the findings reliable as they can be tested in another study and generalized within a larger population of Veterans

Thus, it calls for future research to highlight on negative effects on physical and mental health as well as suicidal risks associated with PTSD

The study examined the problems that veterans face when transitioning from military service to civilian life.

The study had a sufficient number ofparticipants which included Veterans who had been involved in various major wars (Kintzle et al., 2018).

The topic is of interest due to the complexity of addressing problems associated with PTSD among veterans. PTSD is a major issue among veterans as it interferes with their physical, social, and psychological functioning which makes it necessary for mental health practitioners to enhance their understanding of the health issue to help veterans achieve better mental health outcomes.

The accuracy of the findings can be established as the study used the path mode analysis to give a visual of how the social connectedness, combat experience, and discharge status combined can have direct or indirect effects on PTSD symptoms. The study had no conflicts of interest.

Veterans are at a high risk of developing PTSD due to the traumatizing events they encounter while on duty; thus, need adequate support to cope with the experiences and overcome the transitional challenges they may experience after being discharged from the military.

Step 2: Summary of Analysis

This article can be recommended to inform professional practice because it is a scholarly evidence-based article that can be used as a source of evidence for evidence-based practice. The article provides relevant evidence that can be important to Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP) because it provides information on specific factors that can contribute to PTSD among veterans. A PMHNP can use the article to examine various ways to reduce PTSD symptoms in veterans and how to enhance their coping mechanisms. For example, the authors suggest that veterans should be helped to build proper social connections to prevent feelings of social isolation that may arise after leaving the military. The article encourages practitioners to determine the state of social connectedness among veterans and recommend activities that can be used to promote social connections and prevent the development of PTSD symptoms.

The approach used to identify and analyze the peer-reviewed article included recording, information analysis of the publication, comprehension, and making meaning of the information. The search began with a search for and examination of peer-reviewed articles using several search terms related to PTSD in veterans. The focus of the search was journals that provide a majority of scientific research publications. The other key issue to focus on is the authority and credibility of the researchers or authors, which is important in determining the quality and trustworthiness of the source. The program would then check for hints indicating the writer(s) is/are a researcher or academic. Another important concept is the objective of the research, which determines whether the research is relevant to the topic. It is also necessary to identify the methods used in the research, whether quantitative or qualitative, identify whether the source is current and whether it is a primary or secondary study. The level of evidence provided in the article should also be examined to determine the validity and applicability of the findings.

The strategies that can be used to locate peer-reviewed research include using specific databases that publish articles related to the specific field of study, or by using the multi-search strategy on the library’s homepage. There is a need to identify the search terms or phrases that would be used to search for the article. Because there are so many articles, it is important to apply filters to narrow down results, for example, by selecting articles published within the last five years and those with full-text articles available. The university library provides access to peer-reviewed research from various databases. For example, CINAHL Plus provides access to peer-reviewed journals specifically for nursing and other health topics. As a result, I plan to use CINAHL Plus in my research as it is easy to use and allows one to select peer-reviewed articles. The database also includes a great webinar transcript that demonstrates how to use primary words and subtopics to reduce the number of results provided by the initial search. However, it is important to use several databases and compare the articles found to identify the most relevant article.
