If I received a refugee student from Guatemala in 5th grade, I would make several assumptions. First, I would assume that the student does not understand English Language because the official or common language in Guatemala is Spanish. Second, I would assume that the students’ cultural aspects such as values, norms and beliefs are significantly different from those of the other students in the class. Third, I would assume that the socioeconomic status of the student’s family has been adversely affected by the refugee status.

Students in the preproduction level have limited of English Language. The students in the pre-emergence proficiency level have good comprehension although they are still learning and require significant support. I will start by giving emotional and psychological support to the student if he is affected by the family status. Second, I would provide instructional resources translating Spanish to English language to the students. The resources would include texts, videos and photos. The best approach to reach the parents of such student knowing they do not understand English is to invite them to a conference and have a conversation guided by a translator.

To become culturally responsive to the situation, I would develop a close relationship with the student and his parents. I would direct other students to welcome corroborate with and support. As well, I would incorporate resources related to the new student’s culture in the instruction. In addition, I would ensure that I respect the values, norms, beliefs and other cultural aspects of the student. Supporting English Language Learner
