My North Star

Children are told that if they ever get lost they should look up to the sky and find the North Star; this star will shine bright and lead them back home. For me, this star was always my mom. Young, single, and a mom of two, she was the bright light that always made sure everything was taken care of. From school work to baton practice she was there for every moment, with a smile that made everyone around her feel as though she was their mom. Her petite frame and short brown hair made her seem like a teenager to most, but her independence and fierce mothering instincts were nothing to mess with. She was a force to be reckoned with, and someone I considered to be the bravest, most independent, and loving mother anyone could ask for in life. But in one moment our lives changed forever and I got to see a side of her that I never knew existed. Parents are something that most people take for granted, but when you witness them in the darkest moments of their lives you tend to appreciate them more every day. But even after all of the pain and tears this amazing woman regained her strength to become an even better mother and grandmother.

A single mom working endless hours to support her two daughters, living in a small town with little to no help, she managed to not only buy her first house without any assistance, but she did it all while working full time and not missing a beat in her home life. The neighborhood kids all knew her as “mom” because sleepovers were a weekly thing in her household and even dress up was allowed as long as she could take pictures. Baton and dance in a house of girls was a must, but when it came time to put on the tights sweat dripped down her face and steam rolled out her ears as she ran through the house convincing her miniature humans to get out the door on time. The single life suited her for many years, but at thirty five she finally called with news “WE DID IT, WE GOT MARRIED!”She was beaming from ear to ear and had the rock to prove that after years and years of dating she had finally married the man of her dreams. She carried herself more confidently, shoulders back, head held high, and her eyes showed happiness like never before. Her positive outlook on life never faulted, and her motto “positive and peppy” was heard daily, until one day that will haunt her for the rest of her life.

Broken, sobbing, and kneeling on the floor she was told the unthinkable. Her daughter was passing away at twenty three years old due to an illness that most people walk away from. “How do I leave without her? How do I live? How did this happen?” were questions she would ask over and over again that day and for many days to come. Sitting in the living room at noon on any given day still wearing pajamas, with eyes stained red, and no motivation to move became the normal. Her positive demeanor and peppy attitude were gone, and she was left as a shell of the person she once was. Even a new grandchild could only brighten her eyes for a little while, she would eventually turn away and withdraw from the outside world. “This study examined bereaved parents of deceased children (infancy to age 34) and comparison parents with similar backgrounds (n = 428 per group) identified in the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study. An average of 18.05 years following the death, when parents were age 53, bereaved parents reported more depressive symptoms, poorer well-being, and more health problems and were more likely to have experienced a depressive episode and marital disruption than were comparison parents.” (Rogers, 2010). Broken and dim, the light no longer shined as bright as it once did, but amazingly after months of heartbreaking pain and emotional turmoil she stood up, brushed her flannel shirt off and took a step forward.

Being able to move forward after a tragedy is something that most people can’t accomplish. But this amazing loving independent woman has grown not only as a mother but also as a person throughout this journey. To be able to support grieving mothers in support groups, and talk openly with others about her loss, not only allowed her to rediscover herself but also become a stronger person. Her beautiful hazel eyes and warm hugs are the greatest embrace after a long days work, and hearing her sing to Ed Sheeran while strutting around the kitchen making supper is something that everyone should witness. Not only does this woman have a life worth living, but she appreciates every moment. Snuggling on the couch with her grandson while whispering secrets before bed is her new nightly ritual, and making sure he knows that his grandma loves him is her main goal.

Goals in life change with age, but when something traumatic cuts you off at the knees you have to regain your strength and find not only yourself but also the will to live. This woman has come back to life after a loss that could have been the end of her, and she has done it with grace determination and love. Dancing around the kitchen and having the radio blaring was something she gave up years ago, but with time and family she finally had to be told again to turn it down. Depression and loss can limit a person’s life, but how they choose to deal with that loss, and what becomes of the future is up to them. She chose to live each day with her family, and be at peace with reality, because one day she knows “I will see her and hold her again”.

8-1 Brave Woman Samiya 2 An elder sister is like a second mother for siblings. When you have an elder sister with you, she is your best friend. You would never feel alone and unsafe. I have an elder sister, Samiya. Samiya is always smiling and so pretty with her long black hair and brown big eyes, everyone who see her would be jealous of her beauty. She is so lovely and precious. She is someone who has always put her family first, providing her love, encouragement, and respect. Samiya is been like a pillar to her family since her early age. Similarly, Samiya use to sale vegetables from her vegetable garden and feed her family when she was only fourteen years old. She is been doing everything she can to make sure her family is safe and comfortable. Samiya is a very hard worker women who is always honest and loyal to her employer. Samiya is an inspiration to many young girls and women in our community. She volunteers in the community and encourage young girls and women to continue study and also arts. Samiya is a good dancer, she can perform cultural dance very well. She also teaches young girls and women to dance. She always dream to become a doctor since her childhood. When we were child, I use to become a patient and samaiya use to become a doctor and we would play every day. I still remember that day, I came home from school as usual. It was a bright sunny day. Neighbors were sitting outside and whispering to each other about something but I did not understand anything. I saw samaiya and our parents were sitting quietly on 8-1 Brave Woman Samiya 3 backyard with sad faces and eyes full of tears. I knew that something was not right. Samiya came near me and wishpered, “How would you feel if you can go to USA” ? I was so excited, I replied “ That would be the best day of my life”. My parents and samaiya were so excited and I saw tears of happiness rolling from their big brown eyes. We all got very excited because samaiya told us USA is a land of opportunities and better education. Samiya was only nineteen (19) years when she made a decision that completely changed her life and also the whole family. The decision she made was to move to USA from Nepal. It must be very hard for her to make that decision because she knew that everything is going to change including language, culture, neighbor, food etc. However, Samiya applied for our visa then we started our process to come to USA. It took almost 9 months to be in USA from the day we started process. Samiya was able to bring all of us here in states, I still feel like that was amazing and incredible to shift the whole family in different country in that early age. I am so proud of her. After three years of moving to states, Things had settle in USA for us. we were blessed with our new home and a car. She found a man of her dream then got married. she is blessed with a beautiful baby girl and a cute boy. Samiya’s love and support for our family is the most precious feeling. 8-1 Brave Woman Samiya 4 In conclusion, Never afraid to dream big and make life changing even for the better. The decisions we make every single day will affect our lives. Samiya is very brave women who would never give up no matter what. Samiya has always put her family first, providing her love, encouragement, and respect. She would face with any situations and problem to make her family is safe and comfortable, she respects, loves and encourages all family with support. Samiya is an inspiration and role model to me and many people in our community. She teach us to always put our family first, If you love and support your family you will never be alone. Samiya always dream to become a doctor since her childhood. Even after marriage, She continues her education to become a doctor. I wish to see her as a doctor someday soon.

Prospectus: Affordable housing in America is a serious issues that continues to get worse throughout the years. Due to this crisis, many found themselves apart of the sharpest economic decline America has seen. America suffered from an economic depression from the late 2000s early 2010s which resulted in 8.7 million jobs and four millions homes being lost, while the lives of adult immigrants were effected during this time, people fail to acknowledge the lives of US children and how they might have been exposed to poverty. This brings up to question about the concerns one may have on the children of immigrant’s vulnerability during these periods of crisis. The nation fails to protect the well-being of these children and just did what was best to restore their economic downfall with government spending and tax cuts. While there are countless number of events that have resulted in the decrease of the economies stability, the event I will be focusing on is the Great Recession of 2007 and how it affected the lives of immigrants and more specifically immigrant children. This event resulted in the loss of jobs, businesses, and homes, these loses can have a huge social, economic, and cultural effect on the lives of the children. Emotionally, studies have shown that children dealing with poverty experience more behavioral issues and problems that go unacknowledged due to the parents own problems they are experiencing. Economically, children face struggles with dealing Orozco 2 with poverty and a new sudden alter in the lifestyle they had been normally accustomed to. Culturally, non-immigrant children experienced different effects during the great recession as opposed to immigrant children. The problem of immigrant children being exposed to poverty due to non-affordable housing in America is caused by the failure of the legislative branch not creating proper laws which has resulted in many immigrant children dealing with homelessness. Politically our legislative branch has failed in making proper laws that can protect immigrants and their children. While there have been acts brought on to help this problem, such as the Housing Act of 1949, it did not do justice to all the children who continue to be exposed to poverty. There are government solutions, such as sending social workers, but to immigrant children this is their biggest fear. Immigrant children move to America, a foreign country to them, with their family in the hopes of achieving the American dream. Due to the economic crisis America has with affordable housing, this dream may not be achieved, and a social worker may vote to remove the child from the situation and tear them away from their family. The legislative branch fails in attempts to restoring better laws to protect these children and prevent further children to be put in the same situation. Socially, before any higher authority intervenes, in the scenario where an immigrant family is evicted from their home, children witness the hardships their parents grow through. This creates many setbacks to their mental well-being. At a vulnerable state, they are prone to face many challenges in their journey to adulthood. Culturally, having moved from a different country they have to face more hardships such as discrimination. Many landlords strictly rent to tenants of their desired race. All these problems contribute to the set backs immigrant children are exposed. The Great Recession is very current to the economic stability of America. Several recent articles published in 2019 all revolve around the same topic that Americas housing crisis is only Orozco 3 going to get worse if change isn’t made. Given that the Great Recession occurred in 2007, after twelve years only progress has been made when looking at it from the point of view of the government. By increasing the mortgage prices, only people who are financially stable buy or rent property and they are not at risk of being evicted. In connection to our class book, Evicted, many characters in the novel only depended on strictly on checks sent from the government to provide for their children and barely make by. The Great Recession has not been the only economic struggle that America has faced. For instance, The Great Depression 1929-1941, The Banking Crisis 1929-1933, and the Stock Market Crash of 1929.
