‘’I’ve got so kind of used to you being in the house that I don’t mind you, but the thought of another woman coming here is too much…’’ (Montgomery). Alexander has undergone small pox attack and the doctor prefers getting him a nurse from town to attend to him at home. However, Peter offers to take care of him, a decision that Alexander appreciates, saying that he would rather be attended to by her than to a whole different woman. This incidence was the first moment when Alexander shows soft feelings towards the presence of Angeline and led to him feeling pleased with her. Prior to this statement, Alexander shows little concern about Peter by prohibiting her from entering his room when he got small pox attack. He feared that she might contract the disease too. Unravelling the critical moment.

The author points out that the Alexander did not need to worry about another woman coming in to attend to him. To Alexander’s relief, the doctor fails to find any nurse from outside to bring in to attend to him. Peter takes good care to both Alexander and Mr. Riley, Alexander’s dog when he is sick. He supplies both of them with good meals such that in the end Alexander follows her to her home, to ask for her hand in marriage. His mind has totally changed about Angeline.
