George Orwell’s 1984 is a novel developed in 1949 and continues to make relevance to the current world. Published over seventy years ago, this book reveals its prophetic works to the political arena presently. One of the main reasons behind the book’s relevance to date is how Orwell developed it as a warning sign to the tendencies associated with liberal democracies. Orwell using his book sheds light on the danger of totalitarianism to society. Using different characters, Orwell demonstrates the lengths to which power within a totalitarian regime can affect the community and thereby suppress their rights and freedom.

The only person allowed to think and make decisions is Big Brother, who is the supreme leader. Those who go against the land rules are arrested and punished for committing a felony—the Ministry of Truth where Winston work is used to censor individuals and advance propaganda. Whatever people do is monitored, including their thinking. This aspect can be identified in the current word. Although the freedom to think and act independently is yet to be banned as portrayed by Orwell’s novel, the same has been happening in the country. Using social media, the current governments spread propaganda and what they want people to think is true and hide from them the truth by feeding them constant lies. Political propaganda has been prevailing, which has made it impossible to link and sink in reality. People ought to be given freedom and to receive trustworthy information lest the political prophecy by Orwell materializes.

Orwell’s novel is a political prophecy of what would happen in a world where the government has total control of its people. Totalitarianism and propaganda began prevailing as they did in Oceania, where people were denied independent thinking freedom. In the article published in 2017 titled Op-Ed: The case for restricting hate speech, Laura Beth Nielsen raises an interesting issue that people rarely ponder. Fate speech has been every day in America and other societies. From personal experience, I agree that hate speech is normalized in the US. I agree with Nielsen that the main reason for normalization is the lack of laws applying to the whole society criminating hate speech (Nielsen, 2017). One question aroused by Nielsen’s article in mind is; why should laws be restricting types of harmful speech, such as incitement and obscenity, yet hate speech is not regulated? Nielsen answers the question by considering the dilemma that the judges experience in making decisions regarding hate speech. According to Nielsen, the judges strive to balance between the harms and benefits of hate speech restriction and maintaining the status quo. For instance, restricting hate speech might lead to the right of expression violation (Nielsen, 2017). In my view, however, the reasons for maintaining the status quo are not convincing as those of changing the law to incriminate hate speech. First, the argument supporting the status quo ignores the fact that restrictions on other types of harmful speech have the same effects as the outcomes of incriminating hate speech. An important issue raised by Nielsen is the fact that the refusal to incriminate hate speech ignores the fact the possible outcomes on the targeted individuals and groups. Another problem that makes me uncomfortable with the status quo is establishing laws that support inequality in society. Some segments of the population, such as workers, shoppers, and soldier’s families, are protected from hate speech. However, some of the most vulnerable groups are not protected. For instance, women and people of color are not protected from hate speech (Nielsen, 2017). The failure to protect such vulnerable groups is an outright ignorance of the tangible harms they are likely to experience. As Nielsen (2017) argues, the vulnerable groups are compelled to live with hate speech as the targets as if nothing can be done. In my view, the law should be applied uniformly and concerning the plight of all people in the community. The current application of speech regulation laws reflects the ingrained inequality in American society. Unfortunately, decisions made by the courts in the past seem to support disparities and discrimination against the minority and vulnerable groups. Thus, I support the Nielsen’s view that categorizing sexist and racist comments as “just speech” allows for accepting discrimination against vulnerable groups. Also, the categorization shows an apparent disregard for the harms of hate speech as established in empirical studies. Confessional poetry is also known as confessionalism and is a technique of writing poems that emerged from the United States in the 1950s. This style is well defined as personal poetry or the ‘I” poetry as it overly focuses on the first person narration of psyche, personal trauma, and individual experiences. Matters concerning sexuality, mental illness, suicide and are also involved in the themes of confessional poetry. Several poets are seen as prominent advocates of this style who emerged between the 1950s and 1960s. However, the confessional poetry model is very critical and calls for the writer to write things at heart. The free-flowing narration is taught to be simple, but then there is an enormous challenge in writing confessional poetry. This is because; about the original writers these types of poems have to adhere to the intonations, rhythms, and structure to make them more appealing and poetic. For instance, W.D. It should, however, be apparent that what makes a poem fit in the confession school is the degree through which it is developed. However, there are many other things such as address and diction which should augur well with the writing. The critics argue that the use of truth in this school of poetry is a bad thing as many readers like to feel deceived and cheated. Thus, by telling a lot of truth may be very unfortunate to this type of poets as their approach demands and at the same time makes them unpopular. However, it is essential to understand that what the critics of this school see as weaknesses is indeed the strength. This is because; the poets are able to come up with this piece to evoke these same feelings and to tell the truth that many writers have shunned ways from. The confessional school of poetry has also been very critical to women as the evolution of women writers came during the period of development of this style.

Confessional school of poetry is, therefore, a very significant way of writing which is both fascinating and wondrous. The writers that use this model try to make their readers experience their personal lives as they narrate the incidences through use of the first person. The writers are also very creative in that they are able to come up with a far different version of writing apart from the rest of school. This is because the confessional poems bring about feelings of sadness, Pity, sympathy, anger, and emotions as brought out through the different approaches of the poet.

The background characters in Marathon Man are mostly the people that encounters on a day to day basis from his neighbors to the people he sees running to the other students at Columbia. As such, we see a wide variety of New Yorkers from business men to petty criminals. The people that Babe sees range in age from young to old, and he sees people of all races and ethnicities. But we also meet other New Yorkers outside of Babe’s story. One of the most important depictions is the one that starts the film.

At the beginning of the film, the viewer encounters two elderly men, one is Jewish and one is German. They are driving crappy cars, one a massive American car of the day, the other a massive Mercedes Benz. They begin to annoy one another and quickly descend into a road rage episode. The depiction of these two men is interesting as they show the relationships between different groups of New Yorkers—the film contains a lot of racial tension, not least of all between Babe and his mostly Hispanic neighbors who perhaps see him as a potential gentrifier although gentrification is quite far away from 1976. Even the location where the road rage encounter takes place is interesting as it is the Upper East Side at around 86-90th streets from 2nd Avenue to the Park.
