PEERS POST:

Several perspectives on needs analysis were discussed in the chapter. What key elements for conducting a needs analysis do these perspectives have in common? How do these perspectives differ?

Needs analysis perspectives all have commonality in that they are all concerned with what problems or changes are necessary, who is the target of the necessary change, and how much of a margin there is between where they are at currently and when the instructional goal is achieved (Brown & Green, 2020). Some perspectives tend to be centralized to one task (goal analysis), while others may combine factors similar to a research study (needs assessment). Some are more concerned with financial bottom lines (performance analysis) (Brown & Green, 2020). The objective and subject matter of the needs analysis will determine the perspective that will be useful in creating solutions to the ID problem. Education homework help

Describe an instructional design scenario where you believe a formal needs analysis would not need to be conducted.

A grocery store chain sees that some of their cashiers are a lot slower than others at checking out people’s orders, causing some customers to be frustrated and the owners to consider installing self-checkout lanes, threatening the jobs of the current employees. The chain may compare cost effectiveness of retraining cashiers, vs. installing digital checkout lanes, to incentivizing employees to do their job faster with bonuses in their paycheck. Likely, this scenario would benefit first from the last option; the employees know how to the do the job, but there’s no real reason for them to do it faster; they are there 8 hours regardless of who is in front of them. The incentive will likely also be more cost-effective than replacing workers with machines.

Is it appropriate to conduct a needs analysis when preparing instruction in a K-12 setting? How might one go about conducting a needs analysis for instruction to be delivered in a 3rd-grade classroom?

While it may be assumed at first that a needs analysis would be conducted by the ID in professional settings like a public school, needs analysis would be conducted by subject matter experts and governmental stakeholders before an instructional designer were faced with the task of the design. The ID would be involved in a goal analysis, focusing more on each individual goal of a specific instruction and what is the most efficient way to reach that goal (Brown & Green, 2020).
