Important Note: Do not delay — Read all instructions and start work on your project immediately during Unit 1. The Unit 4 Case Project Paper cannot be submitted later than the end of Unit 5. If you do not understand any aspect of the assignment, ask the instructor. GB519-2: Evaluate Leadership Approaches to the Process of Decision-making

Your project organization must be selected from the approved case company list located at the end of this document.

  1. Only the title page, abstract, properly APA-formatted headings and subheadings for the final analysis paper and preliminary reference list are due in Unit 3.
  2. The full case study will be due in Unit 4.
  3. A PowerPoint presentation for the case will be due in Unit 5.
  4. The case project should be considered a single assignment, not three separate assignments. Therefore, do not overemphasize the score on any single component of the case. Rather, take a broader and more accurate view of the case project as a single unified assignment worth a total of 200 points. The case project point distribution is as follows:

Part I (Due Unit 3) -The initial formatting/outline                =   25 Points

Part II (Due Unit 4) – The full paper (analysis)                   = 100 Points

Part III (Due Unit 5) – The case PPT presentation                 =   75 Points

Total Case Assignment Points                                 = 200 Points

  1. The textbook, assignment instructions, classroom/course assignment instructions, etc. use several terms interchangeably. The following terms can be understood as referring to your project or individual elements of the project: case project, project, case or case paper. If you have any questions about any of the terminology, please do not hesitate to ask in the Virtual Office.
  2. Much of the case project will be an exercise in developing your skill at following instructions. Therefore, be sure to read all assignment instructions (for all Units — 3, 4, and 5) very carefully before starting the writing process.

Gentle Reminder: If you do not understand plagiarism and how to avoid violating the rules of academic integrity, please review the tutorial in the classroom titled “Plagiarism.” It can be found under the Academic Tools tab. All written papers (and many of the Discussion Board posts) will be submitted to Turnitin to determine originality of content.

Unit 3 Case Part 1 Assignment Specifics:

Part 1 of the case, due in Unit 3, includes creating the title page, abstract, Level 1 APA headings and Level 2 & 3 APA subheadings, and preliminary reference list for a formal analysis paper. However, you must preview the Units 4 and 5 assignment instructions also to fully understand the requirements for the Unit 3 Case Assignment. GB519-2: Evaluate Leadership Approaches to the Process of Decision-making

The order of presentation must follow the grading rubric order.

Be thorough! Short answers do not provide the necessary analysis or critical thinking. Be sure to complete all required rubric sections for all parts.

Important Notes:

  1. Your Unit 3 Assignment should only include sufficient page length to include: title page, abstract, full paper headings and subheadings (which will be used for the full analysis in Unit 4) and a preliminary reference list.
  2. Use the APA template provided in the classroom Course Resources as the foundation for constructing your Unit 3 Assignment, but do not submit your assignment with any of the original APA template content remaining in your assignment Word® document.
  3. A properly formatted title page with running head and abstract is required.
  4. Do not include a table of contents.
  5. Do not repeat or copy the assignment question narratives. You may use abbreviated versions of the questions as headings and subheadings. Anything that artificially increases the length of the paper but does not add value to the analysis will result in a reduced score.
  6. For more specific information and guidance, please access the following resources available in the writing resources located within the Academic Success Center area in the left navigation pane: “How to Write an Abstract”
    1. “How to Get Help with Your Writing”
    2. “APA Headers and Title Page Tutorial”
    3. “Using Headings and Subheadings in APA”
    4. “APA Reference Page”
    5. “Formal Versus Informal Writing”
    6. “Using Sources”

After you have completed the Unit 3 Case Paper title page, abstract, outline, and preliminary reference list, upload your Word document to the Unit 3 Assignment Dropbox before 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Tuesday of Unit 3. Your assignment filename must use this format: LastName_FirstName_Unit#_AssignmentName

For example: Smith_Joan_Unit3_CasePart1.

Assignments submitted late will be subject to the Late Policy described in the Syllabus.

Case Study Part 2

This is Part 2 of the case study project and is due in Unit 4. (Part 3 will be due in Unit 5.)

The following Course Outcome is assessed in this assignment:

GB519-2: Evaluate leadership approaches to the process of decision-making.

Part 2 of the project, due at the end of Unit 4, requires you to complete an analysis of a manufacturing organization. This evaluation will also provide the foundation for Part 3 of the project.

For the case project Part 2, you are to conduct research and complete an analysis of the manufacturing company you selected.

Note: Do not delay — Read all instructions and start work on your project immediately during Unit 1. The Unit 4 Case Project Paper cannot be submitted later than the end of Unit 5. A 1-week (10%) late penalty will be assessed for papers submitted late.

Your project organization must be selected from the approved case company list located at the end of this document.

A title page with properly APA-formatted running head, an abstract, and reference pages are required. Review the “APA Template” and “APA Sample Paper” documents in the writing resources located within the Course Resources in the left navigation Content pane. Incorporate all feedback and guidance from your Unit 3 Case Part 1.

  1. Begin with an introduction to the organization. Identify its manufacturing segment. Detail briefly the products manufactured by your organization and the company’s market niche and/or customer base.
  2. Identify significant costs in your organization. Some of the topics to research and present about your organization include but are not limited to: (a) costs associated with environmental concerns, (b) cost behavior, (c) prevention costs, (d) appraisal (detection) costs, (e) internal failure costs, and (f) external failure costs.
  3. Include a section devoted to cost-volume-profit analysis (CVP). Review Chapters 18 and 19 in your textbook. The level of detail you include in this section is flexible. But, make sure your analysis is related to actual financial data from the company. Suggested metrics include the contribution margin, degree of operating leverage (DOL), break-even point, and others. Remember, it is vital that you determine whether or not you will have access to this information before you start the project. Otherwise, you may not have time to change organizations later during the course.
  4. Discuss budgeting considerations. Include the organization’s budget process (for example, whether it is top-down or bottom-up) and the organization’s budget variances, and discuss management decisions related to budgeting.
  5. Based on independent research and additional textbook readings, create a balanced scorecard (BSC), incorporating all four of the organizational dimensions (financial, customer, internal business, and learning & growth). Identify two or three strategic objectives (SOs), also known as critical success factors (CSFs), for each category/perspective. Then, evaluate and analyze your organization’s performance in relation to these critical success factors. (To help you with this part, review the material found on pages 14-19 and 24-20 to 24-22 of the textbook.) Do not simply cut and paste a BSC collected from an online source. Create your own BSC. Eaton, D., & Kilby, G. (2015). Does your organizational culture support your business strategy? Journal for Quality & Participation37(4), 4.

  1. Discuss corporate sustainability and responsibility.
    1. a) Identify the concepts of corporate sustainability.
    2. b) Identify the topics related to corporate responsibility.
    3. c) Discuss how your organization implements the concepts of corporate sustainability and responsibility.
    4. d) Discuss how your organization could further benefit from additional attention to sustainability and responsibility.
  2. Analyze potential biases in the organization’s decision-making processes.
    1. a) Evaluate the role of heuristics in managerial decision-making within your organization.
    2. b) Evaluate how heuristics may bias your organization’s management decision-making.
  1. Finally, end with a summary review. (A formal “Conclusion” heading and section is required.) Use subheadings to discuss key strengths and weaknesses of the organization and describe recommendations to be made to the current organizational strategy.

Part 2 of the project should have a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 10, properly formatted, double-spaced pages of analysis. The assignment will be evaluated for content, analysis, critical thinking, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting. So, be sure to proofread and then proofread again! Be certain that you do a “Spelling and Grammar” check on your project paper before it is submitted to the Dropbox.

Include the appropriate headings and subheadings for every section of the project. A good strategy will be to use the assignment rubric as a basic outline for headings and subheadings.

The 8- to 10-page minimum/maximum does not include the required title, abstract, and reference list pages. Do not use enlarged type, extra line spaces, extra points at the end of a line, oversized graphs and charts, or unusual margins to artificially inflate the page length — the score will be significantly reduced if the proper APA formatting for these elements is not applied.

Do not use wordy phrases. Do use economy of expression. Use concise and precise language that avoids slang or colloquial expressions. For example, instead of using “on the other hand,” simply use “alternatively.”

Your project must be presented in accordance with the guidance found in the APA Publication Manual, 7th edition. The Writing Lab is a tremendous resource, so please take full advantage of the great help available there. You may access the Writing Lab by going to your My Studies tab located at the campus home page. Then, access the Academic Success Center link. The writing resources will be located there for your access.

One very important suggestion will be to use the Writing Center’s paper review service. You do not have to wait until your paper is fully completed to ask for a review. One thing to note, though — the Writing Lab will not be able to provide any feedback related to the specifics of the assignment content. However, they will be able to provide sample guidance about spelling, grammar, formatting, punctuation, and all elements of a formal written analysis. Case Study Part 3

Turn in Part 3 of the case study at the end of Unit 5.

The following Course Outcome is assessed in this assignment:

GB519-3: Examine global interconnectedness as it applies to managerial accounting and decision-making.

The third and final part of the case study is due at the end of Unit 5. Part 3 of the case study is a PowerPoint presentation with voiceover recording. The voiceover will be the narrative you would be presenting if this were a live presentation. You will be making a presentation to the board of directors of your organization.

Your Unit 4 Case Study Part 2 Assignment will be the starting point for your PowerPoint presentation. Begin with a brief introduction on the introductory slide. Then, using your Unit 4 case study assignment as the basis, build a PowerPoint presentation that discusses all required components of the analysis of your selected manufacturing organization. However, the presentation will include an additional segment not required in the case paper. If you have not submitted the Unit 4 Case Study Part 2 Assignment, you will not be eligible to submit Unit 5 Case Study Part 3.  GB519-2: Evaluate Leadership Approaches to the Process of Decision-making

Like the Unit 4 Case Study Part 2 Assignment, your PPT presentation should:

  • Be based on the unit reading and additional articles.
  • Begin with a brief review of the organization. Keep in mind that the members of the board may or may not have read the report you completed in Parts 1 and 2 of the project. Even though this will be a brief presentation, it should include all essential information and data.
  • Identify significant costs in your organization.
  • Include a section devoted to cost-volume-profit analysis (CVP).
  • Discuss budgeting considerations. Include the organization’s budget process and budget variances and discuss management decisions related to budgeting.
  • Present a balanced scorecard, incorporating all four of the organizational dimensions (financial, customer, internal business, and learning and growth).

New Requirement for the Presentation: Next, incorporate a discussion of “global interconnectedness” as it applies to your organization. Use the textbook and the additional article readings as a basis for analysis. For example, how do global economic pressures impact your organization? Are there any direct or indirect international competitors? If so, how is that competition managed? Discuss any heuristic implications or biases based on global interconnectedness.

Finally, end with a summary review of the performance evaluation. (A formal “Conclusion” slide is required.) What are the key strengths and weaknesses of the organization? What changes would you recommend be made to the current organizational strategy?

Additional content could include a discussion of any potential biases that could potentially impact the outcome of the decision-making process related to the continued success of the organization.

The PowerPoint presentation should include 12–14 slides. The first slide must be a title slide, and the final slide must be your reference list. The audio presentation (voiceover) should be 15–20 minutes long. In addition to recording the voiceover, the text of your voiceover must be written into the Notes section of each slide.

Proper grammar and spelling will be an important part of the assignment. So, be sure to perform a spell check.

Important Note: One of the most important techniques to use in any PowerPoint presentation is to create clean, crisp slides that use a minimal number of bullet points. If the slide is too cluttered, the presentation suffers. Therefore, the Notes section underneath each slide should be the place where all of the topics in that slide are thoroughly developed. Do not add the body of your presentation to the slides. Only incorporate the main “talking points,” then use the Notes section to add all of the body, thereby creating a more professional and robust presentation. Do NOT simply read the text of your Unit 4 Case Paper for the presentation; that would be ineffective.

Name your assignment PPT filename using this format: LastName_FirstName_Unit#_AssignmentName. For example: Smith_Joan_Unit5_CasePart3.

Assignments submitted late will be subject to the Late Policy described in your Syllabus.
