Here is the question : Buddhism has been classified as both a religion and a philosophy. In your opinion, what aspects of Buddhism are best categorized as religious, and what aspects are best categorized as philosophical? Why?
Here is my respond :

The biases regarding religion or philosophy have been a matter of question in the recent past. It was not discussed in times when both religion and philosophy held hands together. In a traditional sense, Buddhists don’t pray to any god or gods but follow the ‘Dhamma-vinaya’ – “the doctrine and discipline” taught by Gautam Buddha. In my opinion, there are various aspects of Buddhism which could be classified as both religious and philosophical. The philosophical aspects consist of techniques to follow a life leading to liberation. According to Buddha, the core meaning of our lives is to seek answers and in order to gain the capacity to use the knowledge to get enlightenment; we must realize that nothing lasts forever. He insisted that suffering must be accepted because it always comes with a path to cessation and life is all about that path and its journey. Philosophical in Buddhism Discussion

  Further, Buddha insisted that there is no self. He stated that if there were a self, it would’ve been permanent. On the other hand, the mysticism that Gautama Buddha preached has been the root of believing his teaching as a religion. His ideas of karma and rebirth direct the idea of something more than self, controlling these phenomenon’s. According to me, religion, apart from its modern definition, is a search for a higher self that further leads us to believe in someone superior to us in all aspects. Moreover, Buddhism is just another efficient practice or path defined to reach our higher self, which may further lead to believing in nature for instance to be superior. Here the key difference is that nature is not subjective to human form but the very ideology of both understandings is not much different. This idea comes from the Zen theory which says that to attain knowledge, one must empty his/her brain from previous unwanted knowledge he/she already has. Now, the knowledge comes by practicing the religion and following the philosophical aspects of that religion. This new knowledge has a source that can be perceived as a superior power governing us, another religious aspect. What is require ?i

In your response to one member’s posting, identify which of the aspects a (non-Buddhist) American might find appealing, and which of the aspects a (non-Buddhist) American might find difficult to accept. I think the religious aspect of Buddhism is that it prays and worships. Religion is generally the basis for the pursuit of human mental posture and the value of life as a human being, because human life is governed by religious beliefs, and the culture and values of society must be influenced by religious spirit. The philosophical aspect of Buddhism is the law. Buddhism is based on Buddha’s teachings and considers them sacred. In other words, Buddha’s words become law. So I think it can look philosophical.
