BUSINESS OPERATIONS AND ADMINISTRATION

In almost every health care organization, no matter the size, there are several departments or individuals that work to support the overall goal of the organization. Not one department is less important than the other, because all departments work together in some manner to support the quality of health care provided. For example, the Facility Management Department’s goals may include ensure cleanliness of the organization and maintaining of grounds (i.e., landscaping). This indirectly impacts quality, as these goals are appreciated by consumers.  Non-clinical support services such as (but not limited to) maintenance, engineering, finance, human resources, admission, compliance, and security all have an important role in health care business operations and administration.

Based on your research, select two (2) non-clinical areas/departments of business operations and/or administration that support each other closely (e.g., Billing and Compliance).

Part 1:

In the first part of this assignment you are to choose one (1) of the two (2) selected non-clinical area of business operations and/or administration (e.g., Billing). You are to prepare a 2-page informational report that identifies:

  1. Leader of the department (e.g., V.P. of Billing)
  2. At least two (2) sub-departments (e.g., Collections and Coding)
  3. Manager and two (2) key personnel in each sub department (e.g., Manger of Collections: Collections Coordinator and Payment Posting Analyst)
  4. Services provided in selected department.

(Note: Informational reports contain information only and no commentary from the writer. This type of report includes data, facts, and results about a specific subject in detail without any explanation or suggestions. You may choose to use the Billing and Compliance as your two departments, however, you must research and use different employee titles that are used as examples in Part 1 of this assignment.)

Part 2:

In the second part of this assignment you are to create a 1- to 2-page memorandum that advises the second selected department (e.g., Compliance) of the following:

  1. How the department explained in Part 1 supports second selected department.
  2. Two trends that have an impact on the department explained in Part 1. Analyze the trends, and thinking as a health care administrator, explain how the two departments can work together to capitalize on these trends to improve operation and bottom line performance.

Length: 4 pages (not including title or reference page)

  1. Limit your response to a maximum of 4 pages.
  2. Include an introduction and conclusion in your paper.
  3. Support your case with peer-reviewed articles, with at least 4 references. Use the following link for additional information on how to recognize peer-reviewed journals: http://www.angelo.edu/services/library/handouts/peerrev.php.

Scope-of-practice (SoP) laws that govern the practice of nurse practitioners (NPs)

Much of the ongoing debate over scope-of-practice (SoP) laws that govern the practice of nurse practitioners (NPs) across the country focuses on the cost of and access to health care and on whether these laws legitimately promote patient safety or are simply anticompetitive restrictions on NPs’ ability to compete with physicians. After completing the following CE activity at Medscape https://www.medscape.org/viewarticle/506277_1 ( sign for the free account), please answer the following questions:

Should an NP who is educationally prepared as an acute care NP work in an adult primary care setting?

Is it within the scope for an FNP to diagnose and treat uncomplicated mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, and ADHD?

Are there any restrictions for the FNP to treat patients with mood disorders and to prescribe them antipsychotics or SSRIs ?

Discussion Grading Criteria:Agreeing and disagreeing do not mean just voicing one’s opinion. The focus of the discussions should remain on the ideas posed in the readings. Agreeing and disagreeing mean making scholarly arguments from the literature that may support your own ideas. Faculty expects you to support your ideas from the readings or similar scholarly writing about the topic in nursing literature. Always cite your source(s).

Week 3: Discussion

Study 1: Course content related to chronic wounds in nursing degree programs in Spain.

Brief Description of Method Employed:

This study is a cross-sectional descriptive study that talks about chronic wounds in a nursing degree program. This article is about a study that offers a point of reference to consider where we are in this field and what should be done to improve the preparation of healthcare professionals, thereby improving the prevention and treatment of chorionic wounds.  114 colleges were analyzed in this study.

Data Collection Steps

Study           1:Course contentrelated to chronic wounds in nursing degree programs inSpain.

Comments

Step 1

Identifying the variables in this study

114 centers with degree programs.

Step 2

Analyzing the degree in nursing program information and accessing the program and course content that was available online.

Registro de Universidades, Centros y Titulos degree program was analyzed. Search terms included degree titles containing “Nursing”.

Step 3

Analyzing the content of each course description and/or syllabus

Two researchers independently analyzed the content of each course description or syllabus and reached a consensus agreement.

Step 4

Analyzing elective courses

All elective course options were recorded and placed into the different categories that had anything to do with wounds or nursing.

Step 5

Identifying the limitations of the data collection.

The limitation of the data collection was the lack of a common set of official criteria governing nursing course content description.

Conclusion:

This article concludes that they observed differences in the presence of the four top educational priorities in wound management and tissue repair. Pain management in patients with the chronic wound is not addressed in any course, and more courses consider the treatment of pressure ulcers than their preventions

Spiritual Assessment

This assignment requires you to interview one person and requires an analysis of your interview experience.

Part I: Interview

Select a patient to interview, be sure to focus on the interviewee’s experience as a patient.

Create a spiritual assessment for evaluating the spiritual needs of the patient. Create your own tool for assessing the spiritual needs of patient.

Your spiritual needs assessment survey must include a minimum of FIVE questions that can be answered during the interview. During the interview, document the interviewee’s responses.

The transcript should include the questions asked and the answers provided. Be sure to record the responses during the interview by taking detailed notes. Omit specific names and other personal information through which the interviewee can be determined.

Part II: Analysis

Write a 750 word analysis of your interview experience. Be sure to exclude specific names and other personal information from the interview. Instead, provide demographics such as sex, age, ethnicity, and religion. Include the following in your response:

  1. What went well?
  2. Were there any barriers or challenges that inhibited your ability to complete the assessment tool?      How would you address these in the future or change your assessment to better address these challenges?
  3. How can this tool assist you in providing appropriate interventions to meet the needs of your patient?
  4. Did you discover that illness and stress amplified the spiritual concern and needs of your interviewee? Explain your answer with examples.

Submit both the transcript of the interview and the analysis of your results. This should be submitted as one document. The interview transcript does not figure into the word count.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide.

Extraneous variables

Comment 1

Extraneous variables are undesirable variables that influence the relationship between the variables that an experimenter is examining. These variables are undesirable because they add error to an experiment. A major goal in research design is to decrease or control the influence of extraneous variables as much as possible (Psychology World, 2017).

The extraneous variables can be held constant by creating a standardized environment and procedure so that all variables are the same in each condition and cannot be confused. These variables exist in all studies and can interfere with obtaining a clear understanding of the relationships among the study variables.

For example, if a study focused on the effect of relaxation therapy on the perception of incisional pain, the researchers would have to control the extraneous variables, such as type of surgical incision and time, amount, and type of pain medication administered after surgery, to prevent their influence on the patient’s pain perception. Selecting only patients with abdominal incisions who are hospitalized and receiving only one type of pain medication intravenously after surgery would control some of these extraneous variables. Controlling extraneous variables enables researchers to determine the effects of an intervention or treatment on study outcomes more accurately (Grove, Gray & Burns, 2015).

To control an extraneous variable the research needs to identify those variables that are most likely to influence the dependent variable. This is done based on the researcher’s common sense, logical reasoning, and past experiences. For example, being in a loud room can cause distraction to people taking a test than that of a quieter room. So, using a quiet room, you are inhibiting the extraneous variable of noise. Furthermore, once identifying an extraneous variable they can be controlled by either holding a variable constant or matching value across treatment conditions (Psychology World, 2017).

Comment 2

Extraneous independent variables can be very hard, or even impossible  in some situations, to control and can have an influence on the result  or dependent variable. One example of this is when the subjects are  people. Inclusion criteria help to eliminate some inconsistencies in  subjects; however exclusion criteria must be relatively broad simply  out of necessity. Every person is different and finding a sample of  individuals with all of the same demographic, personal history, and  family history is usually not possible.

There are many methods to reduce the effect that extraneous  variables have on the dependent variable. Grove, Gray, & Burns  (2015, p. 38) state “Laboratories, research or experimental  centers, and test units in hospitals or other healthcare agencies are  highly controlled settings in which experimental studies are often  conducted. This type of setting reduces the influence  of extraneous variables, which enables the researcher to  examine the effect of one variable on another  accurately.” In these types of facilities attempts are made to  control the environmental factors such as lighting, temperature, noise  level, etc. Regardless of the cause and the method to control  extraneous variables, researchers should be aware that these variables  can influence or skew results. “Researchers need to consider  the extraneous variables identified during data collection, data  analysis, and interpretation. They should also note these variables in  the research report so that future researchers can be aware of and  attempt to control them (Grove, Gray, & Burns, 2015, p. 311).

Compliance Program

Your health care organization has had several small compliance incidents in the past two years, and the organization is now motivated to update their compliance program. Your executive leadership team asked you to review two health care compliance programs from similar organizations to determine how they constructed their compliance program and what aspects your organization should adopt.

Select the type of health care organization you want represented in this assignment (e.g., family practice, hospital, urgent care, or nursing home).

Locate two compliance program documents from comparable health care organizations using your Internet search engine.

Read both compliance program documents and examine the similarities and differences between the two.

Create a matrix that compares how both organizations execute the following compliance components:

  • How internal monitoring and auditing is conducted
  • How compliance and practice standards are implemented
  • The designated compliance officer (or person designated to be the contact for compliance matters), who that person reports to, and their relationship to the organization’s governing board
  • How employees are trained and educated to model compliant behaviors
  • How violations or offenses are detected, reported, and corrected
  • How lines of communication with employees is developed
  • How disciplinary standards are enforced

Write a 525- to 700-word executive summary that informs your executive leadership about the matrix you created and offer your opinion as to which best practices the organization should adopt for its own compliance program.

Cite the 2 compliance program documents and any additional references that support your opinion (e.g., trade or industry publications, government or agency websites, scholarly works, or other sources of similar quality)

Nurse’s Role in Influencing the Legislative Process

Nurse’s Role in Influencing the Legislative Process

For this week’s project, you’ll answer three questions related to your opportunity as a nurse and an advocate. The first two questions relate to influencing a bill is traveling through the legislative process. The third question refers you to the social determinants of health as described in your course textbook reading and asks you to think specifically on your role as a nurse in influencing social determinants of health.

In a brief paper (no more than 2 typed pages, 1 inch margins, 12 font Times New Roman or Courier New), answer the questions below. Write each question as a new topic area and then follow with a paragraph or two to answer the question. You may find it necessary to search for answers to the questions outside of the assigned reading. Be sure to use APA guidelines for writing style, spelling and grammar, and citation of sources.

Answer the following questions:

  • What parts of the lawmaking process does a nurse have an opportunity to influence the final bill passage?
  • List at least two ways that this influence can take place. In your opinion, would one way be preferable over the other?
  • Reviewing the social determinants of health, select one to respond to this question:
    • What role can nurses play in promoting health status through policy changes directly affecting this social determinant?

Submission Details:

  • Submit your response in a 2-page Microsoft Word document (500 words).
  • Name your document SU_NSG4068_W2_Project_LastName_FirstInitial.doc.
  • Submit your document to the Submissions Area by the due date assigned.
  • Cite sources in the APA format on a separate page.
