Transitions in Professional Nursing

Nursing certification plays an integral role in promoting positive patient outcomes. Certified nurses are able to make informed decisions and translate evidence-based literature to practice. Certified nurses often take the lead in preventing adverse events in health care environments such as patient falls, pressure injuries, and hospital-acquired infections. In an article titled “Making the Case for Nursing Specialty,” Blozen (2016) argues that nursing certification plays an integral role in improving personal satisfaction and patient care. Assigned Article Summary

Nurses in the United States are increasingly pursuing certification in their specialty areas. According to Blozen (2016), certifications open doors for nurses to not only improve patient care, but to also increase their job satisfaction. The benefits of certification are far and wide, ranging from improved professionalism to increased job opportunities and recognition. Blozen (2019) asserts that specialty certification from a legit nursing organization supports and validates the nursing profession and personal professionalism. Once one acquires a nursing degree, they can validate their professionalism and experience by certification. As such, certification elevates and affirms one’s commitment to deliver high-quality work.

The process of acquiring certification is an elaborate one. Blozen (2016) identifies steps that nurses can take to acquire certification. For instance, most certifying organizations requires completion of an examination to obtain initial nursing certification. Thereafter, a nurse can continue education to renew the certification. American nurses have over 180 nursing specialty certifications to choose from. They may begin with self-reflection and research in order to identify one that meets their career goals.
